Designer and Studio Member Michael Seibert

Michael started studying with us more than 2 years ago, instantly knew what he wanted to pursue, and full on went for it - Now a Member and daily fixture, We’re in awe of him, his ideas, and his fearlessness. His only limitations are the size of the kiln.

Tool Carving Workshop on 10/17 with Zach Hadlock

Join the Master of Craft - legendary wood worker and potter, Zach Hadlock - in a 4 hour carving intensive workshop!

We always say that the pots at The Met weren’t made with store bought tools - Potters have been self sufficient and resourceful for thousands of years, which is a quality we tend to lose when everything is so conveniently a click away.
In this workshop You’ll slow down, reflect, and learn to make the tools you need, the way you want them.

“In this four-hour hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to design and carve throwing sticks (aka egotes), ribs and other clay shaping tools using locally sourced hardwood and a sloyd knife. Students will shape their custom throwing stick for use in forming deep vessels with narrow openings, or create ergonomic ribs to shape and finish hand-built and wheel thrown pots. The class will begin with a short demonstration of splitting a log and axing out a billet and then move to instruction on: using a craft knife effectively and safely; essential knife grips and efficient carving methods; how to understand the nature of wood and its characteristics in order to make a tool for optimal performance and durability; and step by step rough shaping and refining form. Each student will get a sloyd knife, wood billets from which to make their customized tool, and individual time with the instructor. We will spend four hours together in the gardens at Atlas Studios learning to whittle away until our throwing sticks and ribs emerge from the wood.”

Paul Wackers, my friends.

Paul Wackers is a painter with a studio down the hall from us - he dabbled with ceramics in the past, but started taking classes with us about 2 years ago to hone skills and better understand the technical aspects of clay. He trialed and errored the heck out of the process, and takes his lumps with grace, as all potters must.
Now, I dare say he is working in this medium as fluently as he works with a brush and canvas.
Interestingly, his work in clay doesn’t appear to be a reinvention of himself, as many artists who start working in ceramics do, but an evolution of his long established studio practice.
He’s incorporating wheel thrown pieces, hand rolled slabs and coils, inlaid texture, and ceramic specific paints and glazes to achieve wall mounted works that literally and figuratively pop out, but also fit in with the rest of his repertoire seamlessly.
Really something to behold.
Very happy to fire these in our kilns.
Plus, he’s a nice guy 👍🏼
