Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. Its job is to attract and bind water — up to 1,000 times its weight. But it doesn’t care where that water comes from. In dry air, air conditioning, or winter, it pulls moisture from deeper layers of your own skin instead of the environment.
Now stack an HA cleanser, HA toner, HA serum, and HA moisturizer with no proper sealant on top. You’ve created a high concentration of humectant sitting on the surface with nothing locking it in — and in dry conditions, that actively dehydrates you.
HA also comes in different molecular weights. High molecular weight sits on the surface and plumps. Low molecular weight penetrates deeper. Layering multiples of the same weight isn’t giving you more benefit.
The fix: apply to damp skin, always follow with an emollient or occlusive moisturizer to seal. HA is a delivery mechanism — it needs something to lock it in or it’s just pulling. 🔬
