Searching first.A planet 124 light years away, orbiting its star in the habitable zone, just produced the most promising biosignature signal ever detected on an exoplanet.

The James Webb Space Telescope detected chemicals in the atmosphere of K2-18b that on Earth are only known to be produced by living organisms. The planet is 2.6 times the size of Earth and 8.6 times its mass, and is suspected to be a hycean world, meaning it potentially has a planet-wide ocean beneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.

The molecules detected were dimethyl sulfide and possibly dimethyl disulfide. On Earth, these compounds are produced exclusively by biological processes, primarily by marine phytoplankton.

Here is where it is important to be precise. This is not a confirmation of life. It is a detection of chemicals that, on Earth, require life to produce. Whether the same is true on K2-18b, whether the signals are real and not instrumental artifacts, and whether abiotic processes on a hycean world could produce the same molecules through chemistry alone, are all still open questions.

Several follow-up studies examining the same data found insufficient evidence to support the biosignature claims, with researchers noting that expanded chemical models and additional statistical tests failed to confirm the earlier hints.

The lead researcher at Cambridge was direct about the uncertainty: "It's important that we're deeply skeptical of our own results, because it's only by testing and testing again that we will be able to reach the point where we're confident in them."

What makes this moment genuinely significant is not the certainty of the result. It is that for the first time in history, humanity has the technology to even ask this question from 124 light years away. JWST can parse the chemical composition of a distant planet's atmosphere by analyzing how starlight filters through it during a transit.

A decade ago this measurement was not possible. Now it is routine enough to generate scientific debate.

The answer to whether we are alone may not come in a single announcement. It may arrive exactly like this, incrementally, contested, uncertain, and more interesting for all of that.

I went out last night for some astrophotography. It was a perfect night for it. I set up my star tracker and explored a few deep sky objects. I started with a 3min long exposure of The Milky Way Galaxy over Canton Lake at 14mm.

Mars may appear to be a cold, quiet world, but its surface is constantly shaped by powerful whirlwinds that can tower high above the planet's dusty landscape.

By analyzing more than 20 years of observations from the European Space Agency's Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft, scientists have tracked 1,039 dust devils across the Red Planet, providing new insights into how Martian dust is lifted and transported around the globe.

These spinning columns of air are often compared to tornadoes on Earth, but they are more accurately known as dust devils. They form when sunlight heats the Martian surface, causing warm air near the ground to rise rapidly through cooler air above. As the air rises, it begins to rotate, creating a swirling vortex that picks up dust and carries it into the atmosphere.

Some Martian dust devils are truly enormous. They can grow more than a kilometer wide and reach heights of several kilometers, making many of them far larger than the dust devils commonly seen on Earth.

Scientists believe these whirlwinds play a major role in shaping Mars's climate by redistributing dust across vast distances. The dust they lift can influence atmospheric temperatures, weather patterns, and even the appearance of the planet from orbit.

Interestingly, dust devils have both positive and negative effects on robotic explorers. While they can reduce visibility and coat equipment with dust, they have also been known to unexpectedly clean solar panels by blowing away accumulated dirt.

Several Mars rovers have benefited from these natural cleaning events, allowing them to continue operating long after their expected mission lifetimes.

The newly compiled catalog of more than a thousand dust devils is helping researchers better understand the complex interactions between Mars's atmosphere and surface, bringing us closer to understanding how the Red Planet evolves over time.

The story of Masha became famous around the world after reports from Russia claimed the stray cat helped save an abandoned baby during freezing winter weather in 2015.

The infant had reportedly been left in a cardboard box near apartment buildings in the city of Obninsk, where winter temperatures can easily drop below 0°C (32°F).

Residents said Masha climbed into the box beside the baby, using her body heat like a blanket to help keep the child warm.

What made the story even more remarkable was the cat’s behavior afterward.

Witnesses said Masha began meowing loudly and persistently, drawing the attention of a nearby resident who came outside to investigate.

The baby was later taken to a hospital and was reportedly found to be in surprisingly stable condition despite the cold exposure.

It was launched on a rocket barely more powerful than what gets used today to put satellites in low Earth orbit. It is now the farthest human-made object in existence.

Voyager 1 left Earth on September 5, 1977, powered by roughly 470 watts of electricity, about the output of a few household light bulbs. It flew past Jupiter. Past Saturn. Then it kept going, through the outer solar system, through the termination shock, through the heliosheath, and on August 25, 2012, it crossed the heliopause, the boundary where the Sun's solar wind gives way to interstellar space, becoming the first human-made object to ever leave the Sun's protective bubble.

As of 2026, it is over 24 billion kilometers from Earth. A signal from Voyager 1 traveling at the speed of light still takes more than 22 hours to reach us. It is moving at 17 kilometers per second and has no destination.

Its power is fading. NASA expects the mission to end in the early 2030s when the plutonium running its instruments finally gives out.

After that, Voyager 1 will keep going anyway, silently, indefinitely, carrying a golden record with sounds and images of Earth into a galaxy that may never find it.

Worldwide, shark attacks on humans are extremely rare, typically causing only a handful of deaths each year despite millions of people entering the ocean annually.

Most shark species pose little or no threat to humans, and many attacks are believed to result from mistaken identity, with sharks often releasing a person after a single exploratory bite.

Humans, however, kill sharks on a vastly larger scale. Scientists estimate that tens of millions, and possibly over 100 million, sharks are killed each year through commercial fishing, bycatch, and the shark fin trade.

Many are caught unintentionally in nets and longlines intended for other species, while others are targeted specifically for their fins, meat, liver oil, or cartilage.

This imbalance has had serious ecological consequences. As apex predators, sharks help regulate marine ecosystems by controlling prey populations and maintaining balance throughout the food chain.

The decline of shark populations can trigger cascading effects that impact entire ocean environments.

The perception of sharks as ruthless killers has been heavily influenced by movies, sensational media coverage, and the dramatic nature of the rare attacks that do occur.

✈️🔊 BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER... WITHOUT THE BOOM?

For more than 75 years, going faster than sound came with a price: the famous sonic boom. A powerful shockwave so loud that supersonic flights over land were heavily restricted.

Its incredibly long, needle-like nose, specially designed fuselage, and engine placement help prevent the waves from combining into the explosive sonic boom we normally hear. Instead of one massive blast, people below should hear something closer to a distant thump.

Think of it like this:

A traditional supersonic jet hits the air with a hammer.

The X-59 tries to slice through it with a scalpel.
