The evaluation report is only the beginning. What matters most is what happens after your child walks back into school on Monday.

Comprehensive testing can open the door to accommodations, an IEP, or a 504 plan, but only when the results are translated into a plan the school team can act on. A written request creates a paper trail. Tying each accommodation to specific test findings protects it from being dismissed as parental preference. Consistent follow-up is what turns a written plan into daily reality.

If back-to-school planning is on your mind, our team is here.

When most people picture OCD, they imagine visible rituals: hand-washing, checking, organizing. For many people living with OCD, none of that is what is happening.

Their obsessions are intrusive thoughts or "what if" questions. Their compulsions are silent: mentally reviewing a memory, silently repeating a phrase, or asking for reassurance again and again. This more hidden version is sometimes called Pure O. It is not less serious. It is just less recognized.

Naming the pattern is often the first turn in the cycle toward something different.

It is tempting to look for one cause when something feels wrong. A difficult childhood. A specific event. A particular relationship.

But distress is almost never the product of one variable. It emerges from a convergence of many factors: temperament, attachment, family, specific events, structural realities, and the relationships you are in right now. Resilience has just as many sources.

You are not the result of one wound. You are the result of a complex pattern of influences, and that can be understood, tended to, and worked with.

Panic can feel like your body has turned against you. Racing heart, tight chest, tingling hands, a mind convinced something is terribly wrong.

For people who have experienced trauma, this response is not random. The nervous system learned, often early and often for good reason, to react more quickly and stay activated longer. That learning helped you survive. It is also why the same alarm can fire long after the original threat is gone.

Your body is not broken. It is responding to what it has been carrying, and it can learn something new.

A common worry about EMDR is that it will force you to relive your worst memory in full detail. The reality is much quieter than that.

EMDR begins slowly, with relationship building and skill work that often resembles ordinary talk therapy. When reprocessing eventually begins, you stay fully aware and fully in control. You can pause whenever you need to.

What shifts is not the memory itself. The events still happened. What changes is how much the past keeps intruding on the present.

Repair after a serious relationship rupture does not only happen in session. It happens in the small, consistent choices partners make between appointments.

Slowing down when emotions spike. Staying present to a partner's pain without defending. Naming the need underneath a hard moment. Building small daily acts of attention. And tending to individual healing alongside the couples work.

Emotionally Focused Therapy offers a structured, compassionate path for this kind of repair. It is rarely linear, and it is some of the most meaningful work two people can do together.

🌿 Therapy doesn’t have to happen within four walls.

At IMPACT, we offer outdoor therapy (also called walk-and-talk therapy) as an option for many clients. For some people, walking side by side in nature can make it easier to open up, reduce stress, and feel more grounded during sessions.

Research suggests that spending time outdoors can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, support emotional regulation, and enhance overall well-being. Combined with therapy, it can create a space that feels both restorative and productive.

Outdoor therapy isn’t the right fit for everyone or every concern, but for many clients it offers a refreshing alternative to the traditional office setting.

If you’ve been curious about therapy - or you’re looking for a different way to engage in the process - we’d be happy to talk with you about whether outdoor sessions might be a good fit.

🌳 Available with select IMPACT clinicians in the Hudson Valley.

You should never have to choose which part of yourself to bring to therapy.

Your race, your gender, your sexuality, your neurotype, your faith, your story. They do not exist in separate boxes. They braid together, and the stress of carrying them in a world that often refuses to see all of you is real.

The right therapist can hold the whole picture.
