Today, someone asked me a question that honestly touched me.
She said:
“I’m HIV positive. Who will want to marry me?”
She wasn't asking about medication.
She wasn't asking about her viral load.
She was asking about love.
---
And I understood why she was scared.
Because after an HIV diagnosis, some people immediately start thinking:
“Who will accept me?”
“Can I still date?”
“Can I get married?”
“Can I have children?”
“Will someone reject me when they find out?”
---
Let me tell you something very important.
HIV does not cancel your ability to love or be loved.
It does not mean your life is over.
It does not mean marriage is impossible.
And it does not automatically mean you cannot have children.
---
But you have to approach relationships differently.
First…
Take your treatment seriously.
If you are living with HIV, stay connected to your healthcare team and take your antiretroviral medication consistently.
Don't stop because you feel healthy.
Don't stop because someone told you that you look fine.
HIV can be controlled even when you have no symptoms.
---
And please know your viral load.
When HIV treatment reduces the virus to an undetectable level and it remains undetectable, HIV is not s*xually transmitted.
This is what people mean by:
U=U — Undetectable = Untransmittable.
That knowledge can completely change the way you see your future.
---
But there is another important part…
Honesty.
If you are HIV positive and you want to enter a serious relationship, don't hide your status because you're afraid the person will leave.
I know disclosure can be frightening.
You may be rejected.
You may be judged.
But the right person deserves the truth, and you deserve a relationship built on honesty.
---
And to the person dating someone living with HIV:
Don't automatically assume that your partner will infect you.
Learn.
Ask questions.
Get tested.
Discuss prevention with a qualified healthcare professional.
Depending on the situation, options such as PrEP and condoms may provide additional protection.
---
Now let's talk about something many people are afraid to ask:
“Can I have children?”
Yes.
People living with HIV can have children.
But pregnancy should be planned with proper medical care.
The mother needs appropriate HIV treatment and monitoring, and the healthcare team will guide the couple through pregnancy, delivery and infant care to greatly reduce the risk of transmission to the baby.
---
So please…
Don't allow an HIV diagnosis to convince you that your future has ended.
You can still fall in love.
You can still get married.
You can still build a home.
You can still have children.
You can still have dreams.
---
But there are things you should NOT do.
❌ Don't stop your medication.
❌ Don't hide your status from healthcare providers.
❌ Don't rely on traditional remedies instead of prescribed treatment.
❌ Don't have unprotected s*x without understanding your partner's status and prevention options.
❌ Don't allow stigma to make you isolate yourself.
---
And there are things you SHOULD do.
✔️ Take your treatment consistently.
✔️ Monitor your viral load as advised.
✔️ Keep your medical appointments.
✔️ Learn about U=U.
✔️ Have honest conversations with serious partners.
✔️ Seek professional guidance when planning pregnancy.
✔️ Surround yourself with people who support you.
---
And if someone rejects you because of your HIV status…
Please remember:
Their rejection does not determine your worth.
You are still a human being.
You are still deserving of respect.
You are still deserving of love.
---
I have seen how an HIV diagnosis can change the way someone looks at themselves.
But your diagnosis is a medical condition.
It is not your identity.
---
So if you're HIV positive and you've been thinking:
“Maybe nobody will ever marry me…”
Please don't give up on yourself.
Get healthy.
Get informed.
Know your status.
Know your viral load.
Take your treatment.
And when love comes…
Build it on honesty, respect and understanding.
---
HIV may be part of your medical history…
But it does not have to be the end of your love story.
You can still love.
You can still be loved.
You can still build a family.
Stay informed. Stay healthy.
