I know that it’s fall when the Golden raintrees, Koelreuteria paniculata, in the backyard begin to bloom. This type of tree was my favorite for many years. I know I noticed the first one about 13 years ago. It was at the end of the street I lived on at that time, and I was blown away at first glance. Tall, with a large yellow blooming canopy. Two years ago, I bought this house with the intention of establishing a native landscape. I’ve been successful in the front yard, but the backyard with the row of raintrees is a different story.
The rain tree is invasive due to high seed production and prolific self-seeding, germination can take 6-8 days. I managed to not let any new trees start by hand pulling the saplings up, luckily I can identify them easily.
I recently listened to an episode of The Compost Pile where David Pool and Aaron Barnhill discussed Native, Non Native, and Invasive Species of Plants. These Golden raintrees are definitely a non native invasive species to my area, and I’m not sure of their fate in my backyard. 💛💛💛
