🧡 Nutrition Support for Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs)
Did you know that NETs can create unique nutritional challenges?
For someone living with a neuroendocrine tumor, “eating healthy” may not always be enough.
The tumor, digestive changes, surgery, and some treatments can make it harder for the body to absorb or maintain certain nutrients.
Here are a few important ones to know about:
🌱 Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Some serotonin-producing NETs can use up tryptophan, which may contribute to low B3. Deficiency can cause fatigue, diarrhea, skin changes, and mental fog.
💙 Vitamin B12
B12 supports your nerves, energy, and blood cells. Low B12 can cause fatigue, weakness, numbness, tingling, and balance problems.
☀️ Vitamin D, A, E & K
Digestive or pancreatic problems can make it harder to absorb these vitamins. Vitamin D is especially important for bones and muscles.
💪 Protein
NET patients can be at risk for losing muscle. Protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, and soy can help support strength.
💧 Magnesium & Other Minerals
Frequent diarrhea or poor absorption can cause nutrient losses and contribute to weakness, cramps, and fatigue.
🌿 What Can You Do?
✔️ Eat smaller meals if large meals cause symptoms
✔️ Include protein throughout the day
✔️ Choose foods your body tolerates well
✔️ Stay hydrated
✔️ Stay active as your healthcare team allows
✔️ Ask your doctor about checking vitamin and mineral levels
✔️ Consider working with an oncology dietitian
One important reminder: Don't automatically start taking high-dose vitamins or supplements. Some vitamins can build up in the body and become harmful. Testing and individualized guidance are important.
🌱 At Fresh Start Wellness, we believe wellness begins with understanding your body and having informed conversations with your healthcare team.

🌿 BLACK SEED OIL: WHAT DOES IT REALLY DO FOR YOUR BODY?
You may have heard people say that black seed oil can “cure everything.”
That’s a pretty big claim—and science doesn’t support that.
There is some interesting research behind this traditional plant.
Black seed comes from Nigella sativa, sometimes called black cumin.
One of its best-studied compounds is thymoquinone, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
So what might it actually do?
1. MAY HELP CALM INFLAMMATION 🔥
Inflammation is part of the body's normal immune response. The problem is when inflammation stays elevated for too long.
A 2023 systematic review looked at 20 randomized controlled trials involving more than 1,000 people. Researchers found that Nigella sativa supplementation was associated with lower levels of some inflammatory and oxidative-stress markers, including CRP and TNF-α.
That doesn't mean black seed oil “cures inflammation,” but it suggests it may have an anti-inflammatory effect.
🩸 2. MAY HELP WITH BLOOD SUGAR
This is another area where the research is interesting.
An updated 2024 review looked at 30 randomized controlled trials and found that Nigella sativa supplementation was associated with lower fasting blood sugar and HbA1c.
- HbA1c is basically a measurement of your average blood sugar over the previous few months.
The important part: the studies were not all identical, and researchers still need better studies to determine the ideal dose and length of use.
❤️ 3. MAY SUPPORT CHOLESTEROL LEVELS
A 2024 meta-analysis looked at 34 studies involving more than 2,200 adults.
Overall, Nigella sativa supplementation was associated with improvements in several cholesterol measurements, including:
• Lower total cholesterol
• Lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
• Lower triglycerides
• Higher HDL (“good”) cholesterol in that analysis
Again, this doesn't mean you should stop cholesterol medication or use black seed instead of medical treatment.
Think of it as a potential nutritional support—not a replacement for treatment.
🫀 4. WHAT ABOUT THE LIVER?
This is one of the areas I find especially interesting.
A systematic review of clinical trials involving people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease found that several studies reported improvements in liver fat and liver enzymes after Nigella sativa supplementation.
That doesn't mean black seed oil can “detox” your liver.
Your liver already does the body's detoxification work.
A better way to describe it is that black seed may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects that could potentially support liver health.
🦠 5. WHAT ABOUT THE GUT?
This one gets exaggerated online.
Black seed has antimicrobial effects in laboratory studies, but that does NOT mean drinking black seed oil will “kill bad bacteria” or cure gut problems.
There is some interesting research involving digestion and the gut, but compared with the evidence for inflammation, blood sugar and blood lipids, the human evidence is much less convincing.
So I wouldn't make “gut detox” one of the major claims for black seed oil.
🧬 6. WHAT ABOUT AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS?
This is another area where we need to be careful.
Because Nigella sativa appears to affect inflammatory and immune pathways, researchers are interested in its possible role in inflammatory and immune-related conditions.
But “anti-inflammatory” does not automatically mean “treats autoimmune disease.”
Human research is still limited for many specific autoimmune conditions.
And if someone takes medication that suppresses or modifies the immune system, they should talk with their healthcare professional before adding concentrated herbal supplements.
BLACK SEED OIL VS. GROUND BLACK SEED
They're related, but they're not exactly the same.
Ground black seed contains the whole seed, including fiber, protein, minerals and plant compounds.
Black seed oil concentrates the oil-soluble compounds, including thymoquinone.
So don't assume that a study using black seed powder means the exact same dose of oil will produce the same result.
This is one reason it's difficult to give everyone a single “correct” dose.
⚠️ AND MORE IS NOT NECESSARILY BETTER.
Black seed is a food-derived botanical, but concentrated oil is still a biologically active supplement.
It may affect blood sugar and blood pressure, and it can cause digestive upset in some people.
If you're taking medication—especially medication for blood sugar, blood pressure, blood clotting, or other chronic conditions—it's smart to discuss supplementation with your healthcare professional.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Black seed oil isn't magic.
It isn't a “detox.”
It isn't a cure for cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disease or liver disease.
But the research does suggest that Nigella sativa has biologically active compounds that may help support antioxidant defenses and may have beneficial effects on inflammation, blood sugar, cholesterol and some markers of liver health.
That's a much more realistic—and scientifically interesting—way to look at it.
🌿 Nature can be powerful. But “natural” doesn't automatically mean harmless, and promising research doesn't automatically mean proven treatment.

Supporting the Body Through Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs):
The Importance of Targeted Nutrition
When facing a neuroendocrine tumor (NET), nutrition is about more than simply “eating healthy.”
The body may have specific nutritional needs because of changes caused by the tumor, treatments, surgeries, digestion, and nutrient absorption.
At Fresh Start Wellness, we believe education empowers you to have informed conversations with your healthcare team and make supportive lifestyle choices alongside medical care. 💚
✨ Key Nutrients to Pay Attention To:
-Vitamin B3 (Niacin):
The NET-Specific Nutrient
Some serotonin-producing NETs can use large amounts of tryptophan, which may reduce the body’s ability to make niacin. Low levels may contribute to:
• Fatigue
• Diarrhea
• Skin changes
• Mood changes
• Brain fog
-Vitamin B12: Energy & Nerve Support
B12 supports healthy nerves, energy production, and blood cells. NET-related surgeries, digestive changes, and certain medications may increase the risk of deficiency.
Signs of low B12 may include:
• Fatigue and weakness
• Tingling or numbness
• Balance issues
• Memory concerns
-Vitamin D + Fat-Soluble Vitamins (A, E, K)
Healthy digestion and fat absorption are important for these vitamins. Deficiencies may affect:
• Bone strength
• Muscle function
• Immune health
• Nerve health
-Protein: Protecting Strength & Muscle
Maintaining muscle is an important part of supporting overall health during cancer care.
Aim for quality protein sources such as:
🥚 Eggs
🐟 Fish
🍗 Poultry
🥛 Dairy or Greek yogurt
🌱 Soy and other tolerated options
🌿 Other Supportive Habits:
•Choose foods your body tolerates well
•Consider smaller, more frequent meals if needed
•Include protein throughout the day
•Stay active as your health allows
•Monitor nutrient levels with your healthcare team
Questions to discuss with your medical team:
• Could I have nutrient deficiencies?
• Am I absorbing my vitamins properly?
• Do I need pancreatic enzymes?
• Would an oncology dietitian be helpful?

🥗 FINAL THOUGHT:
You don’t need perfect food—you need less mystery in your food.
Small upgrades = big impact over time.
Holistic health focuses on the whole person: mind, body, and lifestyle—not just symptoms.
Chronic stress can affect digestion, immunity, sleep, and hormone balance.
Quality sleep is one of the most powerful tools for healing and wellness.
Spending time in nature has been shown to lower stress hormones and improve mood.
Hydration supports energy, digestion, skin health, and cognitive function.

Organic products often prioritize soil health and biodiversity.
Choosing organic for the "Dirty Dozen" produce items may reduce pesticide exposure.
Organic livestock are generally raised without routine antibiotics or growth hormones.
Buying local and seasonal foods can reduce transportation emissions and support local farmers.
Try some of these!
Do you have any others to add? ❤️
