There’s A LOT of information about locs on the internet…But sometimes the most important conversations are the ones that don’t get enough attention.

So I’m starting a new series here at Knot Your Locs dedicated to the topics that deserve a little more conversation, education, and honesty.

We’re talking about the things that may get misrepresented on the internet because healthy locs aren’t just about how they LOOK.

There’s a whole lot happening underneath the style — your scalp, your hair, your maintenance habits, your culture, and the choices you make along the way.

And honestly?

You deserve to understand your locs, not just wear them because around here, we don’t gate-keep knowledge.

So consider this your invitation to learn, ask questions, challenge some of the things you’ve been told, and have conversations that might make you look at your loc journey a little differently.

🚨 LET’S TALK ABOUT LUMPS & BUMPS! 🚨

Have you ever looked at your locs and thought, “Why does this thing have more bumps than a dirt road?” 😂

Let’s talk about it!

Not every bump in a loc is a bad thing. Locs naturally change as they mature, and some texture, budding, and irregularities are completely normal. BUT… sometimes those lumps and bumps can be a sign that something isn’t quite right. 👀

Here’s what can contribute to them:

🔸 Inconsistent crochet technique: Uneven tension or improper needle placement can create lumps, knots, and an inconsistent loc structure.

🔸 Improper maintenance: Rushing through maintenance or repeatedly working the same areas can contribute to an uneven texture and potential damage.

🔸 Budding and natural maturation: Especially in developing locs, budding can cause little bumps and changes in texture. This is a normal part of the locking process!

🔸 Rapid maturing: When the locs start to mature at a rapid pace this can lead to puckering of the locs which can create weak spots if not addressed

✨ SO, WHAT’S THE TAKEAWAY?

Your locs don’t have to be perfectly smooth to be healthy, and every bump doesn’t need to be “fixed.”

The goal is to understand WHY those bumps are there and determine whether they are a natural part of your loc journey or something that needs attention.

There was a time when I looked up to certain people in this industry; their work was beautiful, their experience was impressive, and they seemed to be the perfect example of someone who could wear several hats while still remaining true to themselves.

A YEAR. 12 months. 365 days. That’s how long this client had been away from my chair.
