Late night ramblings… 🌙

Why do we have such a need to be in control?

I’ve been thinking about this tonight. How much we want to feel heard, understood, safe, and certain about things. And how uncomfortable it can be when we don’t.

In IFS (Internal Family Systems), we talk about manager parts. These are the parts of us that work really hard to keep things together. They plan, organize, overthink, anticipate problems, try to keep everyone happy, and sometimes feel the need to control just about everything.

And the interesting thing is, these parts are usually trying to protect us from something.

Maybe it’s rejection. Being misunderstood. Feeling powerless. Being wrong. Not knowing what’s coming next. Or having to sit with feelings we would rather avoid.

I think about how often we feel the need to explain ourselves over and over. To make sure someone understands our perspective. To have the last word. To prove our point. Or to get someone else to see things the way we do.

And I wonder how often we confuse being heard with being agreed with.

Because those are two very different things.

Sometimes I think we just want the discomfort to go away. We want an answer. We want reassurance. We want to know things are going to work out. And when we can’t get that certainty, we try even harder to control the situation.

But does it actually help us feel safer? Or does it sometimes keep us stuck in the very anxiety we’re trying to get away from?

One of the things I love about IFS is the curiosity it brings. Rather than looking at someone (or ourselves) and thinking, “Why are they so controlling?” we can begin wondering what that part is so afraid might happen if it stopped.

What is it trying to protect?

What has it learned about being vulnerable, being wrong, or not having control?

And I think there’s something worth exploring in our need to be understood, too. Why does it sometimes feel so threatening when someone doesn’t agree with us? Why do we keep explaining long after we’ve already said what we needed to say?

Can we let someone have a different perspective without feeling like we have to change it?

Can we be misunderstood and still feel secure in who we are?

Can we sit with not knowing?

I don’t think the goal is to stop caring, stop speaking up, or just accept things that aren’t okay. There are plenty of situations where we need to advocate for ourselves and have some control over our lives.

But I do wonder how often our manager parts are working overtime trying to control things that aren’t really ours to control.

Other people’s thoughts, reactions, beliefs, choices…

And maybe sometimes we don’t even realize how exhausted those parts of us are.

I think a lot of what we call control is really an attempt to feel safe.

And maybe learning to feel safe doesn’t always come from finally getting everything around us to settle down.

Maybe some of it comes from learning that we can be okay even when things are uncertain, people disagree, or we don’t have all the answers.

Anyway…just some late night pondering. And I certainly have my own manager parts that like to jump in and take over sometimes. ❤️ ~ Jess

Tonight at Mindful Monday • 5:30 PM we’re beginning our October exploration of the Koshas. 🪷

The Koshas are described in yogic philosophy as five sheaths or layers of our experience, beginning with the most tangible — the physical body — and gradually moving inward through breath and energy, mind and emotions, inner wisdom, and deeper peace.

Tonight we begin with Annamaya Kosha — the physical body.

We’ll spend more time slowing down and actually exploring the postures themselves — alignment, sensation, strength, balance, and the small adjustments that can completely change how a pose feels.

We’ll also begin with Bhramari, or humming breath, using the gentle vibration of the breath as another way to notice and arrive in the body.

The focus tonight isn’t “How does my pose look?”

It’s simply:

What am I noticing?

What feels grounded?
What feels strong?
Where am I holding unnecessary tension?
What does my body actually need today?

Expect a grounded, strength-based flow, some deeper posture exploration, a little balance, Wild Thing, and plenty of reminders to feel first, adjust second.

You don’t have to change the body to practice being present with it.

🌼 This week at HoneyBloom + a little update 🌼

Here’s what is currently scheduled through the HoneyBloom app this week:

✨ Monday 5:30 PM — Mindful Monday with Jess

🌿 Wednesday 6:30 AM — Mid-Week Rest with Jess

☀️ Friday 6:30 AM — Morning Bloom with Jess

🧘‍♀️ Saturday 9:00 AM — Flow & Glow with Tammy Koontz

🔔 Sunday 5:00 PM — Sound Bath with Tammy Koontz

A quick note: Tammy is traveling this week, so she won’t be here for Thursday’s class, but she’ll be back next week. 🤍

I also wanted to share a little more about some changes we’re making moving forward.

HoneyBloom is a small studio, and I’m working to create a structure that better reflects how we operate while keeping the studio sustainable for the long term. As HoneyBloom continues to grow into a shared space for different instructors, classes, and offerings, I want to make sure the process stays simple and clear for everyone.

Some instructor-led classes and pop-ups will also be offered outside of the app. In those cases, the instructor will manage their own sign-ups, payments, cancellations, refunds, and class policies directly.

As a general guide:

* If you book a regular class through the HoneyBloom app, you’ll follow the booking and payment information listed for that class, along with HoneyBloom’s usual booking and cancellation policies.

* If a class is offered directly by an instructor, you’ll contact that instructor with questions about payment, cancellations, refunds, or scheduling.

We’ll continue sharing those classes here on the HoneyBloom page, and instructors may also advertise them on their own pages. Make sure you’re following this page so you can stay in the loop. 🌼

HoneyBloom is becoming a shared space for movement, mindfulness, and community, and I’m excited to let it evolve in a way that keeps it affordable, flexible, and sustainable for everyone involved. 🦋🌿

Late night ramblings…

Tonight I’ve been thinking about why fear has been used so often in religion.

Fear creates compliance pretty quickly. It can make us follow the rules, stay inside the lines, avoid certain things, and work really hard to make sure we are doing everything “right.”

And from the outside, that can sometimes even look like devotion.

But I wonder what happens when fear becomes the thing driving us for years, especially for someone who is already prone to anxiety, ADHD, OCD, perfectionism, or just really needing to know they are doing things right.

Prayer can become checking.
Morality can become constantly monitoring yourself.
Our thoughts can become obsessive.
Spiritual practices can become things you have to do enough of, or do the right way, to feel okay.

There’s actually a name for one version of this…scrupulosity.

But the more I think about it, religion certainly isn’t the only place we do this.

We can do it with therapy and healing too.

Eating healthy can become needing to eat perfectly. Exercise can become something we have to do. Self-care can become another checklist. We can obsess over being a good parent, having the right morning routine, journaling, meditating, reading enough, working on ourselves enough…

Even really good things can become another way we measure ourselves if we aren’t careful.

Another set of rules.

Another version of, “If I can just do this right enough, maybe I’ll finally feel okay.”

I was thinking about all of this after yoga with Tammy this morning.

She has such a soft and genuine way of teaching. Nothing feels forced. There’s space to listen to your own body, your own breath, and just notice your own experience.

And this morning I felt so engaged in the practice. Soft. Free. Connected.

There wasn’t fear or pressure involved. I didn’t need to get anything exactly right.

Just movement, breath, presence and connection.

And maybe that’s why practices like this have become so meaningful to me.

They make me curious about how much growth can happen when we feel safe enough to soften instead of being afraid enough to comply.

Maybe it’s not only about whether something is a “good” practice.

Maybe it’s worth noticing what is driving us toward it.

Is it something we are choosing because it brings meaning, connection and curiosity into our lives?

Or has it quietly become another thing we are afraid not to do?

Just what I’m pondering tonight.

And a little plug for Tammy because she really does have a gift for creating this kind of space. ❤️

For October, I’m excited to explore something a little deeper in our yoga classes — The Koshas. 🪷

In yogic philosophy, the Koshas are often described as five sheaths or layers of our being — almost like layers wrapped around our deepest sense of self.

We begin with what is easiest to notice, the physical body, and gradually move inward through breath and energy, the mind and emotions, inner wisdom, and finally a deeper sense of peace and wholeness.

Each week, our flows will reflect a different layer:

✨ Annamaya Kosha — the physical body
Grounded, strength-based flows with attention to alignment, sensation, and how the body actually feels.

✨ Pranamaya Kosha — breath and energy
More fluid, breath-led movement with pranayama and an emphasis on letting the breath guide the practice.

✨ Manomaya Kosha — thoughts and emotions
Steady, repetitive flows that give us space to notice the mind — distraction, judgment, emotion, and the stories that come up.

✨ Vijnanamaya Kosha — inner wisdom and discernment
Balance, pauses, and choices as we practice listening inward and noticing what we actually need.

✨ Anandamaya Kosha — deeper peace and wholeness
Softer movement, longer holds, restorative postures, and more stillness.

We’ll begin each week with Mindful Monday at 5:30 PM, and this month I also want to spend a little more time actually exploring the physical postures themselves — slowing down, looking at alignment, trying different variations, and noticing how small changes can completely shift the way a pose feels.

Then I’ll carry that same Kosha theme into my 6:30 AM Morning Flows on Wednesday and Friday, where we can move through it in a more fluid way.

What I love about the Koshas is the reminder that yoga can take us beyond just the physical body. The poses are still there, but they become a doorway into breath, awareness, reflection, and stillness.

October feels like the perfect month to slowly move inward while also deepening the physical practice itself. 🍂🌼

A soft start to the morning. 🌿
A little movement, a little breath, and a reminder that contentment doesn’t have to mean everything is perfect. Sometimes it’s simply noticing what’s already here. 🤍

🌼 A little HoneyBloom booking update! 🌼

For the next few months, we’re going to simplify things a bit and offer $10 class passes instead of our regular class packages.

A few of our instructors will have a little less availability over the next few months, and because our class schedule may be a bit more limited, I didn’t want to oversell packages and have people worrying about getting all of their classes used in time.

Don’t worry — we’re still here! 🦋🌿

There will still be regularly scheduled classes, Sound Baths, and some fun things happening at the studio. You’ll also start seeing more cash pop-ups, special events, and one-time classes, so make sure you’re keeping an eye on this page!

And for the month of October, our regular drop-in class rate will be:

🌼 $10 per class instead of $12 🌼

Your $10 class pass can be used for one regularly scheduled class and is valid for 30 days from the date of purchase.

Sound Baths and special events are not included in the $10 class pass and will have their own pricing.

We’re just adjusting things a little for this season while still giving you plenty of opportunities to move, breathe, connect, and spend some time with us. 🪷

Keep watching this page because we have more pop-ups and events coming!

🌿 Thursday & Saturday Flow Class 🌿

Join Tammy this week as she continues her Five Vayus series with Udana Vayu.

✨ Thursday at 4:30 PM
✨ Saturday at 9:00 AM

“In this fourth class of our five-part series, we will explore Udana Vayu, the upward-moving current of prana associated with the throat, breath, expression, and our capacity to rise and expand 💫

Through heart-opening postures, conscious breathwork, and practices that create a sense of lift and spaciousness, we’ll cultivate clarity, confidence, and an embodied sense of upward movement. Come and join us this Thursday and Saturday to explore what it means to create space within—and let your energy rise 🪷”

Come flow with me at HoneyBloom this Thursday or Saturday. 🤍
