A rare glimpse into the imagination of Maxfield Parrish.
The Knave Watched Violetta Depart (c. 1910–1912) is an original mixed-media study combining pencil, watercolor, and cut-out elements. Created by one of America’s celebrated illustrators, the work offers an intimate look at the artistic process behind Parrish’s enchanting, storybook imagery.
Its provenance is especially compelling. The study reportedly belonged to one of Parrish’s neighbors in Plainfield, New Hampshire, to whom the artist gifted it after they expressed interest. Parrish was known to discard or even burn his preparatory studies, making surviving examples particularly fascinating.
With its muted blue cloak, delicate pencil work, and theatrical silhouette, the piece captures a moment of quiet narrative within Parrish’s imaginative world.
Presented by Timothy Gordon. Discover this remarkable piece at Ella Home Gallery in downtown Missoula, Montana.
