When is it time to consider spine surgery?
For many patients, treatment begins with conservative care and pain management interventions. But when symptoms continue despite treatment, surgery may become an option.
Progressive weakness or persistent radiating nerve pain that has not improved with injection therapy may indicate that a surgical evaluation should be considered.
The next step isn’t the same for every patient. Your physician will evaluate your symptoms, examination findings, imaging, and response to previous treatments to determine the most appropriate path forward.

CT or MRI? They’re not the same, and each can tell your physician something different. 🔍
After an accident or injury, a CT scan may be used to quickly evaluate for fractures and other bone injuries. An MRI can provide a more detailed look at soft tissues, including discs, nerves, ligaments, and muscles.
One test isn’t necessarily “better” than the other. The right imaging depends on your symptoms, the type of injury, examination findings, and what your physician needs to evaluate.
Swipe through to understand the differences and why the right imaging can be an important part of your care after an injury.

Whiplash can affect more than just the muscles in your neck.
During a whiplash injury, sudden forces can affect structures throughout the cervical spine, including the facet joints. When these joints become a source of persistent pain, a diagnostic facet joint injection may help physicians determine where the symptoms are coming from.
If the injection provides meaningful relief, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may be considered. RFA targets the medial branch nerves that carry pain signals from the affected facet joints, with the goal of providing longer-lasting relief.
But treatment doesn’t stop there. Exercise, stretching, and strengthening can play an important role in supporting the spine and improving function throughout recovery.
Every patient and injury is different. Treatment recommendations are based on clinical evaluation, examination findings, imaging, response to treatment, and medical necessity.

Sometimes, the smallest step can make the biggest difference.
In pain management, treatment doesn’t always mean starting with the most advanced procedure. Each patient’s care is approached step by step, with the goal of finding the least invasive option that can effectively improve their symptoms and function.
Some of the most memorable cases are the ones where a relatively minor intervention helps a patient move better, function better, and return to the activities that matter to them.
Because ultimately, managing pain is about more than relief. It’s about helping patients regain function and improve their quality of life.

Not every accident that looks “minor” results in a minor injury.
From fender benders to high-speed impacts and rollover accidents, the forces involved in a collision can affect the spine in different ways. Injuries may involve the muscles, ligaments, facet joints, discs, nerves, or other structures of the neck and back.
And sometimes, symptoms don’t show up right away.
That’s why a thorough evaluation matters. Your physician can assess your symptoms, perform a physical examination, and determine whether imaging is medically appropriate to better understand your injury and guide your treatment plan.
Every accident is different. Every patient is different. Your care should be too.

Acute pain and chronic pain aren’t the same, and timing can matter.
After an acute injury, care often begins conservatively with options such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, stretching, home exercises, and medications when appropriate.
If significant pain continues beyond several weeks, pain management interventions may be considered to help reduce symptoms and improve function. Allowing persistent pain to go unaddressed may, in some cases, contribute to the transition from acute to chronic pain, which can become more challenging to manage.
The goal is always to find the appropriate level of care based on where you are in your recovery.
Every patient is unique. Treatment recommendations are based on your clinical evaluation, physical examination, imaging findings, response to conservative care, and medical necessity.

Could your back pain be coming from your facet joints?
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), sometimes referred to as a rhizotomy, is a minimally invasive procedure that may help relieve pain caused by the facet joints in the spine.
Before recommending RFA, your physician will perform a diagnostic facet joint injection to determine whether those joints are the source of your pain. If you experience significant relief from the injection, you may be a candidate for RFA.
The procedure targets the small nerves that carry pain signals from the facet joints and may provide longer-lasting relief for the right patients.
Every patient is unique. Treatment recommendations are based on your clinical evaluation, physical examination, imaging findings, and medical necessity.
