Deodorant and antiperspirant are both personal care products designed to address body odor, but they work in different ways.
Deodorant:
Function: Deodorants are primarily intended to mask or neutralize body odor caused by bacterial breakdown of perspiration. They do not necessarily prevent sweating but help control the odor associated with it.
Ingredients: Deodorants often contain antimicrobial agents that kill odor-causing bacteria. They may also include fragrances to provide a pleasant scent. Some deodorants may have additional moisturizing ingredients to soothe the skin.
Sweat Control: Deodorants do not control or reduce the amount of sweat produced by the sweat glands. They focus on keeping the underarm area smelling fresh.
Antiperspirant:
Function: Antiperspirants are formulated to control and reduce the amount of sweat produced by the sweat glands. They contain active ingredients, usually aluminum-based compounds, which create a temporary blockage of the sweat ducts.
Ingredients: The key ingredient in antiperspirants is aluminum-based compounds, such as aluminum chloride or aluminum zirconium. These compounds form a gel-like plug in the sweat ducts, reducing the flow of sweat to the skin's surface.
Odor Control: While antiperspirants primarily target sweat, many also contain deodorant components to address odor. This dual action helps keep the underarms dry and odor-free.
