At some point, trying harder to become healthier stops being the answer...
I see people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s doing an extraordinary amount in the name of health. But theyāre mostly accumulating things. More on this in a minute.
They train five or six days a week.
They track their sleep, HRV, glucose, resting heart rate, and VOā max.
They have cabinets full of supplements.
They order increasingly elaborate blood panels.
They follow longevity podcasts, optimize their diets, change their diets, experiment with fasting, cold plunges, saunas, peptides, and whatever else they saw on IG this month.
And somewhere along the way, health became an all-consuming, complicated, busy job.
There is nothing inherently wrong with measuring things or experimenting. Some of these tools are useful. But we have created an enormous industry around convincing reasonably healthy people that there is always another variable they need to optimize.
Most of us probably donāt need that.
The foundations of health remain remarkably unsexy.
Move a lot.
Maintain your aerobic fitness.
Lift heavy things.
Preserve muscle and power.
Eat mostly minimally processed food.
Get enough protein and fiber.
Sleep.
Donāt smoke.
Drink little or no alcohol.
Maintain meaningful relationships.
Spend some time outside.
Give yourself enough recovery to do it all again tomorrow.
Do those things consistently for decades, and you have captured an enormous percentage of what we actually know how to influence. And most of what actually matters.
The problem is that consistency isnāt very marketable. There isnāt much money in telling someone to walk after dinner, lift three times a week, go to bed on time, and keep doing it for the next 30 years.
So we addā¦
Another supplement.
Another biomarker.
Another wearable.
Another protocol.
Another expert telling us that what we did yesterday is suddenly wrong.
Eventually, more information becomes more noise.
Iām increasingly interested in the opposite approach: What can I remove while still accomplishing what matters?
Not because optimization is inherently bad, but because health should support the life youāre trying to liveānot consume it.
Perhaps the most sophisticated health strategy isnāt doing everything.
Itās knowing what matters enough to keep doing, and what doesnāt matter enough to worry about.
