Words like these are why I do this work. Thank you, Ali. 🤍

Whether it's hiking, painting, sitting quietly by water, or something as simple as noticing your breath, the specific activity isn't really the point. What matters is the intention behind it, and the way it's used as a tool to help you reconnect with yourself.
That's because recreational therapy is built on the idea that purposeful activity, guided by real clinical training and individualized goals, can create meaningful change. It's not about staying busy or distracting yourself. It's about using movement, nature, creativity, or stillness with a specific therapeutic purpose behind it.
That's the real goal, every time. Not just "filling time," but creating space for something real to happen, backed by intention and actual education, not guesswork.

It might look like we're just walking in the woods, listening to birds, noticing what's around us, or taking a moment to be still. But there's science behind the slow down.
Research involving nearly 20,000 adults found that spending at least 120 minutes in nature each week was associated with greater odds of reporting good health and higher well-being. A meta-analysis of 25 studies and 1,900 people found forest-based therapeutic interventions were associated with meaningful reductions in stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Research on natural sound exposure found significant reductions in anxiety, along with measurable changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate in 1,300 people. And a systematic review of 22 studies examining forest bathing and cortisol found that the majority reported reductions in cortisol following nature exposure.
This is where recreational therapy comes in. At Re-Tx Yourself, we aren't simply sending you outside and telling you to relax. We intentionally use nature, your senses, movement, breath, reflection, and meaningful activity as therapeutic tools, with individualized goals and evidence-informed interventions guiding the experience. Because sometimes what looks simple on the outside has a whole lot of science happening underneath it.

This is exactly why I do this work. If you've been thinking about booking your own retreat, this might be your sign.

Yesterday, we had the incredible honor of presenting at the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Multiple Sclerosis Conference 2026! 🌿
We had the opportunity to demonstrate just how adaptable recreational therapy (ATRA GVSU Master's Students in Recreational Therapy GVSU Recreational Therapy Grand Valley State University Recreational Therapy) can be, meeting individuals where they are and creating meaningful experiences for people of all abilities.
Through a digital nature soundscape and the use of natural elements to create a visual anchor nature mandala, we explored how simple sensory-based activities can be the starting point for building a personalized sensory toolkit to support nervous system regulation.
A huge thank you to Taylor and Jenna for making this opportunity a reality and allowing us to share recreational therapy with your patients, providers, and community. 🥰🌿
Thank you to Walter Dowling for always being part of what I do 💚

You don't need a reason to rest.
You don't need a reason to say no.
You don't need a reason to take up space.
You don't need a reason to ask for help.
You don't need a reason to play.
You don't need a reason to go outside and just be.
Somewhere along the way, we started believing rest and joy had to be earned. They don't. You're allowed to feel good just because.
This is a lot of what recreational therapy is about — using the things that already come naturally to us (play, movement, time outdoors) as real tools for healing, not just nice extras. Nature especially has a way of slowing the nervous system down without you even trying.
