There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a beginner hairstylist. In fact, some of the most exceptional talent I’ve ever witnessed has come from those just starting out. I’ve worked alongside a stylist with less than a year of experience who consistently delivered results that outperformed others with 5+ years behind the chair.

Everyone starts somewhere.

However, experience alone does not equal mastery.

Not every stylist fully understands the why behind the techniques they perform. Education varies drastically, and not all beauty schools provide the same foundation. Some stylists advance quickly mastering highlights and balayage early while others require more time and repetition to refine their flow.

And that’s okay.

But when it comes to investing in your hair, value matters.

If you are choosing a stylist based solely on price, pause and ask yourself:

“On a scale of 1–10, how much do I value my hair?”

Because if your answer is a 10… your budget should reflect that.

It’s always surprising to see someone pay $150-250 for a full highlight and then publicly criticize the result as if they expected top-tier luxury work.

You didn’t invest in a luxury service expert you took a budget-based risk.

And that’s okay too. But own the decision.

Allow the stylist the opportunity to learn, grow, and correct the work rather than damaging their reputation online. Every professional deserves that grace.

Let’s talk pricing.

Anything under $275 for a partial highlight or balayage may not reflect the level of expertise, time, and product required for a high-end result.

I personally start my partial highlights and balayage at $297, with a partial + cut at $397 because I stand behind the quality, detail, technique, and experience I provide.

That is not expensive.
That is aligned & competitive.

To the stylists reading this:

If you are undercharging, this is your sign.
Raise your prices.

Your time, your energy, your education, and your artistry deserve to be compensated. Pricing with confidence is part of stepping into your professionalism.

And one of the most important lessons I’ve learned:

If you give a discount *communicate it.*

Even if it feels uncomfortable.

Because if you don’t, clients assume that was your price. And when you return to your actual pricing, it creates confusion, frustration, and resentment, on both sides.

Clarity protects your business.
Transparency builds respect. & gratitude.

Confidence + Skill + Education + Communication = A fully realized stylist.
