🥑 LIPEDEMA & DIET: CAN WHAT WE EAT ACTUALLY CHANGE LIPEDEMA TISSUE?

We often hear:

“Lipedema fat doesn't respond to diet.”

But is it really that simple?

A fascinating clinical study looked at what happened when women with lipedema followed two different eating plans for 16 weeks.

Researchers studied 91 women with physician-confirmed lipedema.

One group followed a:

🥑 Low-Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet

The other followed a:

🥗 Moderate-Carbohydrate, Moderate-Fat, low-glycemic diet

Importantly, BOTH diets were calorie-reduced and emphasized nutritious, minimally processed foods—including vegetables, healthy fats, fish, nuts, seeds and anti-inflammatory foods.

🔬 WHAT HAPPENED?

Women in both groups improved.

But the low-carbohydrate group experienced significantly greater reductions in:

⚖️ Body weight
🩷 Total body fat
📏 Waist and hip circumference
🦵 Thigh circumference
🦵 Calf circumference

Average weight loss was approximately:

LCHF: 8.2 kg (18.1 lb)
versus
Moderate-carb: 2.1 kg (4.6 lb)

The researchers also reported observing reduced extremity pain and improved mobility in the low-carbohydrate group—although those data were not formally presented in the paper.

💡 SO DOES THIS MEAN A LOW-CARB DIET “CURES” LIPEDEMA?

Absolutely not.

And it doesn't prove that everyone with lipedema should follow a ketogenic or very-low-carbohydrate diet.

What it DOES suggest is something much more interesting:

👉 The body composition and limb circumference of women with lipedema can change with dietary intervention.

That is very different from saying:

“Nothing you eat will ever make a difference because lipedema fat can't change.”

🧩 THERE'S ANOTHER IMPORTANT PART OF THIS STUDY.

The LCHF diet wasn't simply bacon, butter and cheese.

It was designed around many Mediterranean-style and anti-inflammatory foods:

🫒 Olive oil
🐟 Oily fish
🥑 Avocado
🫐 Berries
🥦 Non-starchy vegetables
🌰 Nuts and seeds
🧄 Garlic
🫚 Ginger
🌿 Herbs and spices
💛 Turmeric

Processed meats, sugary foods and drinks, refined carbohydrates and many highly processed foods were restricted.

So we cannot say that carbohydrate restriction alone produced the results.

The overall dietary pattern, calorie reduction, food quality and metabolic effects may all have contributed.

⚠️ WHAT THIS STUDY DOESN'T TELL US

This was a relatively small, 16-week study.

The participants were not randomly assigned concurrently to the two diets, and the study measured things like body composition and limb circumference—not whether the characteristic pathological lipedema tissue itself had specifically disappeared.

So this is promising evidence—not the final answer.

But I think it gives us an important message:

💗 Lipedema is a disease. Nutrition isn't a cure. But that doesn't mean nutrition is powerless.

Rather than telling women with lipedema that changing their diet “won't work,” perhaps the better question is:

What nutritional approach best supports the individual person's metabolic health, inflammation, symptoms, mobility and long-term health while living with lipedema?

And THAT is a question worth continuing to research. 🔬
