Before it even launched, Eclipse was our first truly viral product 🖤 Our release of this cream contour shade was messy, but ultimately turned into something beautiful. 

Eclipse started out with a different idea: experimenting with pigmentation to create a * blush * that looked black in the pan. In the development phase, the shade got better and better—more nuanced, and much shadowier. It could still work in a lot of different applications, but it really stood out to us as a truly unique contour shade. 

Brilliant beauty editors picked up Eclipse much earlier than we expected, dubbing it the “Anti-Highlighter”—a dark, shadowy opposite. Their coverage got a lot more attention than we were used to…and some of that attention wasn’t quite what we were expecting.

We have been overwhelmed with the amount of love for Prey, our Forbidden Lipstick shade first released in 2015 🖤 Of the many colors we have created over the years, we have loved them all.

Some colors found their place immediately, easily retained in our permanent collection. But for many reasons, many others have had to vanish after selling out. These we loved privately, long after they had left production, and we often wondered if anyone else remembered them the way we did.

This year, The Archive answered that question resoundingly. Every shade in this release exists because you asked for it, specifically, by name, sometimes for years. Twenty-four of them, across eye, lip, and cheek; more than we have ever released at once.

What surprised us most is the long memory our community has shared with us. You did not just want a general color. You wanted Weeping Lilac. You wanted Sylvanshine. You wanted Soil. Every shade we have ever created carries powerful connections, emotions, and sense memories for us. It’s deeply moving to know that collectively, so many beautiful, remarkable people have held meaning in them too.

Some of what we’ve brought back will stay for good, folded permanently into our collection. Other shades are here only for this moment, small batches we may never recreate again. Both feel significant to us in different ways: the permanence is a kind of promise, and the scarcity a testament to the beauty of colors that—even though they cannot stay—were loved so much they had to come back.
