Menopause can bring noticeable changes to the hair.

Some women develop a widening part, reduced ponytail fullness, more visible scalp or recession around the temples and hairline.

However, do not assume every change is caused only by hormones. Female pattern hair loss, thyroid conditions, nutritional concerns, medications and other medical conditions can produce similar changes.

Common does not mean ignore it.

A dermatologist can help identify the cause and discuss appropriate options.

Alopecia universalis is a rare and extensive form of alopecia areata that causes complete loss of scalp and body hair.

It may affect the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, facial hair and hair across the body.

The distinction is important:

Alopecia totalis means complete loss of scalp hair.

Alopecia universalis means complete loss of scalp and body hair.

It is an autoimmune, nonscarring condition and it is not contagious.

A hairstyle should feel comfortable, not painful.

Repeated pulling from tight braids, ponytails, buns, extensions, or other high tension styles can stress and damage the hair follicles, potentially causing traction alopecia.

Early signs may include broken hairs along the edges, thinning at the temples, tenderness, or a receding hairline. If tension continues for too long, hair loss can become permanent, but recognizing the signs early and reducing tension may help protect your hair.

If a style hurts, feels tight, or is causing tenderness, it is a good idea to loosen or remove it. Give your scalp and hairline regular breaks, avoid unnecessary tension, and seek professional evaluation if thinning continues or you are concerned. Support is available, and early guidance can make a difference.

ALOPECIA DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN TOTAL BALDNESS.

Hair loss does not have to progress to complete baldness before it becomes real or deserves attention.

Alopecia may begin with a widening part, gradual thinning, a receding hairline, excessive shedding, reduced density or small patchy areas.

These changes can be easy to dismiss when you still have hair covering most of your scalp. But early signs still matter.

Notice the change. Check the scalp. If your hair loss continues or worsens, schedule an evaluation with a dermatologist.

ALOPECIA TOTALIS

Alopecia totalis is an advanced form of alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the hair follicles.

Unlike patchy alopecia areata, alopecia totalis causes complete or nearly complete loss of hair across the entire scalp. The scalp usually appears smooth without scarring. Some women may retain their eyebrows and eyelashes.

When hair loss extends beyond the scalp and affects the face and body, the condition may be classified as alopecia universalis.

A dermatologist should evaluate sudden or extensive hair loss to confirm the diagnosis and discuss available treatment options.

Androgenetic alopecia is a progressive, nonscarring form of hair loss that affects both men and women.

In women, it often causes gradual thinning across the top and crown. Some women may develop a pattern resembling male pattern baldness, including recession at the front and temples while the sides and back remain denser.

Over time, the affected follicles shrink and begin producing finer, shorter hairs. Early evaluation by a dermatologist can help confirm the cause and identify appropriate treatment options.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia, also known as FFA, is a scarring form of hair loss that causes the frontal hairline and temples to slowly move backward.

It may also cause thinning or loss of the eyebrows, along with itching, burning, redness or scaling near the hairline. Once the follicles are destroyed and replaced by scar tissue, the hair loss can become permanent.

Early evaluation by a dermatologist may help control the inflammation and slow further hair loss.

Telogen effluvium is a non-scarring form of hair loss that causes increased shedding across the scalp.

It often begins two to three months after an illness, fever, surgery, childbirth, major stress, rapid weight loss, low iron or certain medications.

Because the hair follicles remain intact, regrowth may be possible once the underlying trigger is identified and addressed. Sudden or persistent shedding should be evaluated by a medical provider or dermatologist.
