Are you a “talk during my massage” person or a “let me disappear into the table” person?

Or does it depend on the day?

Personally, when I’m the one getting a massage, I’m definitely in the disappear into the table category. 😂

When I’m working with you, though, I usually just follow your lead. Some days you might feel like chatting the whole session, and I’m always happy to have a good conversation. I work by myself most of the day, so I genuinely enjoy getting to talk with you!
Other days, you may barely say a word because you’re completely relaxed, and I love that too.

And then some of you are somewhere in the middle. You’ll chat for a little while, get quiet, drift off, wake back up and start talking again. When that happens, I try to keep my responses light and easy so you never feel like you have to keep the conversation going.

Basically, there’s no “right” way to be during your massage. Talk, sleep, zone out, go back and forth... your session is your time.

So which are you? 👀

Talker, Table Melter, or Both?

I recently had a client come to me experiencing pain she described as “sciatica.” As we talked through her symptoms and I worked with the surrounding muscles, I noticed some patterns that could be consistent with irritation around the piriformis muscle.

The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttocks that sits very close to the sciatic nerve. When this area becomes tight or irritated, it can sometimes contribute to symptoms that feel similar to sciatica.

Some symptoms people may experience include:

• Deep pain in the buttock
• Pain traveling down the back of the leg, sometimes stopping around the back of the knee
• Tingling or burning sensations
• Discomfort with prolonged sitting
• Tightness or tenderness around the glutes and hip

In some cases, symptoms can travel farther down the leg and even toward the foot.

For my client, I used cupping, myofascial stretching, focused massage, and pin-and-stretch techniques around the piriformis and surrounding muscles to help reduce tension and improve mobility.

After our session, she expressed to me that her pain was 90% relieved! We are hoping to get that last 10% out on her next session. 🙏 😊

If you're experiencing similar symptoms, gentle movement, stretching, and taking breaks from prolonged sitting may help, but everyone's situation is different. Another good way to target this area is to stand next to a wall and place a lacrosse ball right in the dip of your hip where it bends when you bring your leg out next to your body (this is where the piriformis muscle can be accessed), and gently let the lacrosse ball rub around that area by moving back and forth across the ball. (DM me about this if if you have questions.)

The important thing is not to assume that every pain traveling down the leg is “just sciatica.” There can be several different causes, and persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.

If you know someone dealing with similar pain, share this with them. It may be worth exploring whether working on the muscles around the hip and glutes could be part of their solution.
