Sometimes the thing people tell you is a “waste of time” becomes the thing you were supposed to do all along.

Six years ago, I started building Shannon Smith Skin + Beauty on the side.

I already had a full-time career. A full life. Plenty on my plate. Starting a beauty business certainly wasn’t the practical thing to add. 😂

But I kept going.

I learned. I practiced. I invested in my education. I became a certified makeup artist. And, most importantly, I discovered that what I really loved wasn’t simply doing makeup.

It was watching a woman look in the mirror and recognize herself again. ❤️

Not younger.
Not filtered.
Not transformed into somebody else.
HERSELF. Just a little more confident.

And that bride’s review on Slide 2? THAT is why I’m so glad I didn’t listen.

Because somewhere along the way, my little “side” beauty business became a place where I get to teach, create, connect and remind women—especially those of us 45+—that beauty doesn’t have an expiration date.

So if there’s something tugging at you that doesn’t make perfect sense to everyone else…
Maybe it doesn’t have to. ✨

If you were really “bad at makeup,” you probably wouldn’t be nearly as worried about getting it wrong as you are.

I hear some version of this ALL the time:
💬 “I’m terrible at makeup.”
💬 “I never learned how to do it.”
💬 “Eyeshadow looks ridiculous on me.”
💬 “I don’t know where anything is supposed to go.”
💬 “I used to know how to do my makeup…but now nothing looks right.”

And every time, I want to say:
You are not supposed to be the makeup artist. That’s MY job.

You don’t need to walk into a makeup session already knowing your undertone, which colors flatter you, how to apply eyeshadow to your eye shape or why the foundation you loved 15 years ago suddenly isn't doing you any favors.

You also don't need to apologize for not knowing.

My job isn't to show you how much I know about makeup.
My job is to make what I know easy for YOU to use.

I want you to leave knowing:
✨ Which colors actually flatter you
✨ Where to put them on your face
✨ How much product you really need
✨ Which techniques work with your skin now
✨ And how to recreate the look yourself without needing 45 minutes and 27 products

Because especially for women 45+, makeup shouldn't feel like another skill you're failing at.

It should feel simple. Doable. And like YOU.

So if you've been avoiding a makeup session because you're embarrassed to admit you have absolutely no idea what you're doing…
You're exactly who I want sitting in my chair. 🩵

📚 I WILL disappear into a good book and emerge hours later wondering what year it is.

⏰ I run late. A lot. I wish I could tell you I’m working on it, but at almost 50, we should probably just accept this about me. 😂

🐶 I will find a way to work Bulldogs into the conversation. BB. Fergus. Rescue. Bulldog events. Bulldog necklaces. There is no escape.

📝 I make sure every video, whether its a story or a reel or a TikTok has captions. Actual captions. I want everyone to find my content accessible.

🏁 At some point between now and October 25, I WILL ask you if you’ve registered for the Running of the Bull(dog)s. Consider this me asking. 😉

🥪 I hate mayo. There will be no further discussion.

💄 And I might gently suggest that it’s time to rethink some of the beauty products and routines we’ve been hanging onto since 1997.

Because somewhere between the bulldogs, books, Gen X references, skincare, makeup and my inability to arrive anywhere 15 minutes early…my goal here is pretty simple:
I want women 45+ to feel more like themselves again.
Not younger.
Not “fixed.”
Not like you need 37 products and a beauty influencer’s morning routine.

Just confident in your own skin, comfortable with makeup again and maybe willing to have a little fun with it.

So…those are your reasons to follow OR unfollow me. 😂
