Do lice prefer certain blood types?

This is one of those weird lice facts that sounds made up, but there actually has been research on it.

Some studies and observations suggest lice may not love switching between different blood types or Rh factors, like positive vs. negative blood. Researchers have looked at whether blood type affects how lice feed, survive, and reproduce.

But here’s the important part:

Blood type is not the main reason someone gets head lice.

The biggest factor is still close head-to-head contact.

Kids spread lice through:
• hugging
• selfies
• sleepovers
• sports
• sitting close together
• playing side by side
• close contact at school, church, or home

So if your child seems to “always get lice,” it does not mean they are dirty. It does not mean your home is dirty. And it may not be anything you did wrong.

They may just be a close-contact kid.

The best thing you can do is check early, keep hair up when possible, and treat correctly the first time.

Lice is common.
Lice is treatable.
And nobody should feel embarrassed.
