Ankle Stability Technique 3: Toe Grips
The toes and smaller muscles of the foot play an important role in creating a stable connection with the ground and controlling movement throughout the kinetic chain.
Adding resistance to the toes creates a greater challenge, and changing the position of the foot introduces torque from different angles, allowing foot and toe control to be challenged in multiple positions while developing strength, coordination, and stability.
The resistance bands and door hanger used in this technique are available for purchase through our online shop at https://www.templehp.com/gear/
Ankle stability continues with the foot’s ability to actively control position and manage load.
Technique 2: Intrinsic Toe Raises target the smaller intrinsic musculature responsible for refined toe control while providing mechanical input to the tendons, ligaments, and articular structures of the foot.
This helps develop neuromuscular coordination, proprioceptive awareness, and dynamic foot control that contribute to efficient load management through the ankle and kinetic chain.
Ankle stability starts at the ground, with the toes, foot, and ankle working together to create a strong foundation for the entire kinetic chain.
Technique 1: Extrinsic Toe Raises help individuals develop muscular control while supporting the tendons and ligaments that contribute to ankle stability.
Strengthening these structures can improve how the foot and ankle manage load, balance, and movement.
Give this one a try!

Serving sweet clients like Muriel brightens our day here at Temple! Muriel recently completed 12 weeks of Neuro Articular Regenerative Kinetics here at The Temple Human Performance Center!
Great job Muriel! 👏🎉
Ankle stability is not just about the ankle itself; it depends on how the foot, toes, ankle, knee, hip, and trunk coordinate to control movement.
The foot and toes provide the foundation for this system, helping establish contact with the ground and giving the rest of the body a stable platform from which to move.
When foot and ankle control are limited, the body may compensate higher up the chain, potentially affecting balance, coordination, and movement efficiency during activities such as running, golf, or other sports.
This is why improving ankle mobility and strength should also involve developing the ability to control the position of the foot and ankle under load.
Recent research has shown that progressive resistance band training can improve ankle strength and proprioceptive control, reinforcing the value of targeted resistance work for developing better movement control. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39058626/
Ultimately, good stability is less about keeping one joint rigid and more about giving the entire kinetic chain the mobility, strength, and coordination needed to adapt to the demands placed on it.
That’s why we focus on the entire kinetic chain here at Temple Human Performance, using targeted techniques and manual therapy work to help improve stability, control, and overall movement.
