May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and as an esthetician, educating my clients on the importance of SPF, protecting their skin, and staying out of indoor tanning beds is something I care deeply about.

I’ll also be honest about my own past. I worked at multiple tanning salons and used tanning beds far too often, sometimes even twice a day. Knowing what I know now, I have to live with the increased risk that comes with those choices.

For those of you wanting to age gracefully, the sun will age your skin much faster than you think. SPF, sun protection, and protective clothing are not optional, they are essential.

This topic is very personal for me. My dear friend Kathy passed away from stage 4 melanoma. It was aggressive, and she was taken far too soon. Kathy gave me my first opportunity right out of esthetician school by renting me a room in her salon. She was a mentor, esthetician, successful business owner, at one point a young single mom who later met the love of her life in her 30s, and one of the kindest souls I’ve ever known.
