Before you hire a construction company, Scotty Roper of ERE Construction says do your homework first. Check the BBB. Ask for a certificate of insurance — and make sure their subs are insured too, because that's not automatic. Ask for referrals and before-and-after photos. And get everything in writing, including a written warranty — Scotty points out that under Texas Supreme Court guidance, a contractor who doesn't provide a written warranty can actually be on the hook for a full six-year warranty instead of the standard two.
