Defamation lawsuits can become especially risky when a public accusation causes the person being accused to reveal an entirely different version of the story -and that’s exactly what happened during Mel B’s explosive divorce from Stephen Belafonte.
Mel B accused their former nanny, Lorraine Gilles, of
having an affair with her husband. Lorraine turned around and sued Mel B for defamation, claiming she had been portrayed as a “homewrecker” and that Mel’s version left out one major detail: according to Lorraine, SHE had been involved in a relationship with Mel B for approximately seven years. Lorraine claimed most of her encounters were actuall with Mel- not Stephen-and that Stephen only participated with Mel’s knowledge or consent.
Mel B disputed Lorraine’s version of what happened between Lorraine and Stephen, while reports at the time said Mel acknowledged intimate encounters involving all involving all three.
From a defamation-law standpoint, publicly accusing someone of serious misconduct can open the door to litigation over whether those claims were false and damaging to their reputation. And once a lawsuit is
filed, private details can become parf of public court
records.
Mel B accused the nanny of sleeping with her husband-but the nanny’s response was essentially: you forgot to tell everybody about YOUR relationship with me.

Three UK based Nigerian sisters who lived together in Greenford, London, have died in Brighton in a tr@gic su!cide incident that has left many questions unanswered.
Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, had travelled to an area in Birmingham near where their mother drowned in 2010.
The sisters later travelled to Brighton by taxi, arriving at about 10:21pm on 12 May. They were last seen alive at around 2:42am the following morning.
Police found no evidence of third-party involvement, while toxicology tests showed no drûgs or alcohol in their systems.
A search of Christina’s laptop reportedly found several references to water and su!cide. Evidence presented to the coroner also showed that she had experienced anxiety and depr£ssion following their mother’s de@th.
The coroner concluded that the three sisters died by sù!cide, noting that they could not swim and had entered dangerous sea conditions. However, the exact reason they chose Brighton may never be known.

The duo are standing trial on a ten-count charge bordering on stealing, laundering of funds and retention of stolen property.
Count one reads: ‘That you, ALI BALA (a.k.a Barrister Ahmed) and YUSUF UMAR ANKA, sometime in 2025 in Lagos within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conducted financial transactions of proceeds involving your unlawful activities to disguise the source of the stolen £110,000.00 (One Hundred and Ten Thousand Pound Sterling).
Another counts: reads: “That you, ALI BALA (a.k.a Barrister Ahmed) and YUSUF UMAR ANKA, between July and August 2025, in Lagos within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, converted the sum of N500,000,000.00 (Five Hundred Million naira) property of Salihu Muhammed to your use. NAF helicopter makes ‘precautionary landing’ on farmland in Benue two days after Ondo crash
The Nigerian Air Force has said that one of its helicopters made a “precautionary landing” on a farmland in Benue State while returning from an operation against suspected kidnappers along the Enugu-Benue boundary
Eyewitnesses said the helicopter landed on a farmland in Utur Tse-Igboji community, Bar Council Ward along Welfare Quarters to Mopol 13 Ring Road in Makurdi, the state capital.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the helicopter had successfully disrupted the activities of suspected kidnappers during the operation.
“The helicopter had successfully provided close air support to surface forces during an operation targeting suspected kidnappers in the Ogbadigbo area of Benue State, near the Enugu-Benue boundary. The operation disrupted the activities of the criminal elements and supported the advance of surface forces,” the statement read.
“Following the successful completion of the mission, the pilot, on return to base, exercised his professional discretion to execute a precautionary landing approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield.
“This is in accordance with established operational and safety procedures following combat missions. The helicopter has returned to base.
“The NAF remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal elements, providing close air support to surface forces and protecting communities through coordinated air and ground operations.
“The successful outcome underscores the NAF’s continued resolve to deny criminal elements freedom of action and support efforts to restore safety and security to affected communities.”
