My friends, my community, fellow industry workers, and anyone this reaches, I am begging for your help here. The deadline for public comment ends May 20th.
Our government is gutting student loans for the beauty industry. We are being asked to prove our profitability is greater than that of someone with only a diploma or ged (it is, which they already know from tax returns but this is the basis for defunding).
Losing loans for trade schools in barbering, cosmetology, esthetics, and other personal services would eliminate over 90% of new students in these fields.
Many of us come from communities without opportunity. Many have of us had no other financial support. Americans born without privilege were given a fighting chance through these programs.
These industries are the last place where artists have been able to pull themselves up from their bootstraps and thrive.
We have survived. We have grown our communities. We have fed our families and our neighbors. We are parents. We are caretakers. We need your help. Our industry is the oldest in history. Please help us claw back our space to continue our legacy.
