The Shopify / Claude Code argument is focusing on the wrong layer.

Tobi Lütke said he’s considering banning Claude Code at Shopify because it doesn’t natively follow the same AGENTS.md / skills conventions used by other coding agents.

I think his underlying complaint is valid.

But I disagree with the bigger conclusion people are drawing from it.

This isn’t really a Claude vs. Codex problem.

And it isn’t solved just because an agent reads AGENTS.md.

AGENTS.md can tell an agent:

* how the repo works
* what conventions to follow
* which tests to run
* what not to touch

That’s useful.

But it doesn’t answer:

What exact state are you acting on?

An agent can follow every instruction correctly while using:

an outdated branch.

an old passing test.

a superseded review.

a deployment from a different commit.

or evidence produced before another agent changed the code.

That’s the problem I’ve been running into while building across GitHub, Cloudflare, Supabase and multiple AI systems.

So I started treating agent context differently.

Not just:

instructions → action

But:

intent → fingerprint → evidence → verified state → action → new fingerprint

And I keep a bounded continuity receipt between steps.

If the head changes, old proof becomes historical.

If production doesn’t match source, source green isn’t production green.

If another model takes over, it has to reacquire reality instead of inheriting confidence.

If the evidence isn’t there, the state is UNKNOWN.

That’s why I wouldn’t frame this as:

“Claude got worse, so use Codex.”

Today it might be Claude.

Tomorrow it might be Codex.

Next month we’ll probably be routing work across several models.

The model should be replaceable. The truth shouldn’t be.

AGENTS.md helps agents remember the rules.

The harder problem is making sure they can prove what is still true.

Because an autonomous agent with perfect instructions and stale evidence is still confidently operating in the past.

And that, to me, is the real infrastructure problem agentic software hasn’t finished solving.

Product facts should come before big adjectives. Materials, construction, texture, length, care, stock, and fulfillment details should be stated clearly and only when supported.

Support is part of the product. Customers deserve clear upkeep guidance, understandable policies, and a real path to ask questions.

Proof
Trust is earned one verified detail at a time. Missing sourcing, performance, stock, or customer-outcome evidence will not be filled in with louder marketing.

We also corrected our shipping language to match the written policy: orders are processed in 1–2 business days, with an estimated additional 3–5 business days for domestic transit.

This redesign is currently in preview and is not live on the production storefront yet.
