Our bodies are constantly working over time to keep us up right and balanced. During times of stress, the bodies ability to do this becomes weakened. During times of prolonged stress, such as PTSD, chronic anxiety, or other mental health complaints, our body actually starts to lose its ability to do this efficiently.
We use three systems: the interoceptive awareness system, the vestibular system, and the proprioceptive system to create sensory integration for us in regards to posture.
Trauma can cause this systems to not communicate effectively, and over time we can start to take on postural abnormalities to try to maintain our upright stance in response. This can look like hunching, uncomfortable pelvic tilts, or losing strength and leaning to one side of the body. Over time, this erodes our posture and our muscles suffer and work over time in response.
Manual therapy is a great middle man between the nervous system and the muscles. There are so many techniques your therapist has in their toolbox to recreate postural balance and increase neuromuscular efficiency.
