September is here, and this month Lumii is focusing on understanding school support language. ✏️✨

Families may hear terms like IEP, 504, ARD, accommodations, goals, progress, and support plans throughout the school year.

These words can feel overwhelming at first, but you do not have to know every term perfectly to ask questions or be part of the conversation.

This month, we’ll be sharing gentle, parent-friendly education to help families better understand common school support language and feel more prepared when communicating with their child’s school team.

A big thank you to The International Fellowship of Chaplains for inviting us to spend time with their chaplains and talk about neurodivergent-informed support. 💛

We had such a meaningful conversation about supporting autistic and neurodivergent individuals during difficult moments, understanding behavior as communication, recognizing sensory needs, and supporting families.

One thing we will always believe at Lumii is that advocacy starts with education and understanding. The more people in our community who feel confident supporting neurodivergent individuals, the more inclusive and compassionate our community becomes. ✨

We’re incredibly grateful for opportunities like this and as always, we’re happy to provide training, resources, and support to organizations in our community at no cost. 💛

🎒 Glow Tip: Practice routines in tiny steps.

Back-to-school mornings can come with a lot of moving pieces — waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, packing the backpack, getting shoes on, leaving the house, and transitioning into the school day.

For some children, practicing the entire routine at once can feel overwhelming.
Try starting with one small step at a time:
✨ Practice packing the backpack
✨ Pick out clothes the night before
✨ Walk through the morning checklist
✨ Practice getting shoes on
✨ Use a visual schedule
✨ Rehearse the drop-off routine

The goal is not perfection. The goal is predictability.
When routines are broken into smaller steps, children can build confidence, independence, and a greater sense of safety as they adjust to the school year.

Back-to-school season is a great time to talk with children about kindness and inclusion. ✏️✨

Some classmates may communicate differently, need more time, use headphones, move their bodies, use AAC, or need extra support throughout the day.

One of the best things we can teach our children is how to include others with patience and compassion.

Encourage them to:
✨ Say hello
✨ Invite gently
✨ Give time to respond
✨ Include friends who play differently
✨ Give space when needed
✨ Be kind about support tools
✨ Remember that different does not mean less

Inclusion starts with the conversations we have at home. 💛

✨ How your child can access breaks
✨ How home and school will communicate
✨ How accommodations will be used throughout the day
✨ What goals are most important right now

Understanding the plan helps you better advocate, prepare, and support your child.

As Lumii continues to grow, we’ve started exploring the possibility of adding a center-based ABA option in Temple, TX. 💛

Right now, we’re simply listening to current and future families, learning, and seeing whether there is a need for this type of option in our community.

August is here, and with it comes the back-to-school season. 🏫
For many families, this time of year can bring excitement, new routines, big feelings, and a lot of transitions.

This month, Lumii will be sharing gentle reminders and practical support to help children and families navigate school routines, transitions, regulation, and connection.

Because back-to-school doesn’t have to mean doing everything perfectly.
