PTD as a substitute for PPD in hair color. The two ingredients are related. PTD is touted to be much less of a possible cause for irritation or allergic reaction. However, some individuals are also sensitive to PTD The wheel keeps turning!
Let's see what' next in hair color. B
DRY SHAMPOO: This creates a layer of starch (the shampoo) over sebum (the natural oil produced by the hair follicle). As you know, dry shampoo is great for reviving a style but PLEASE remember that applying this is NOT cleaning the scalp. In fact, debris from the product does nothing to keep the scalp healthy.
Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp.. a CLEAN SCALLP. My university biology professor shared that the areas of the body covered with hair hold on to bacteria SEVEN TIMES more than those areas not covered with hair. Philip Kinglsey, a famous trichologist I had the honor of meeting, and who offered wonderful scalp tonics which stimulated hair growth (based in London and NYC), prescribed that the scalp was to be shampooed every single day prior to one of his serums being applied. The results his prescribed serums created were wonderful. Hair GREW!
Of course, his information, as usual, should be considered using your own professional judgement. Again, dry shampoo is a great time-saver and style booster, but PLEASE do not think that it is an effective scalp cleanser. B

So many new color treatments, bonders, leave-in strengthening and shining treatments, damage defenders. Wow! Some great new things to help our work become easier and longer-lasting. Do we NEED all of them? Do they COST us more? The choice is yours. And unless your service charge covers the increased cost per application, consider all this with care before diving in. B
If salon pros ‘fire’ every rude, tardy, critical client they have…. They may find themselves unable to grow their business. Of course, no one should permit violent, threatening or demeaning behavior…. But clients today expect the service they are paying for. Almost everyone is experiencing an unhappy financial situation. Remember, clients are not your family members or your friends. When you deliver great service, your more appreciative, kinder client base will grow. … Business is not always easy. Be brave. B

I would love to read a copy of a state board exam's written questions.. Just how relevant and up-to-date are the questions asked on this exam? AND... Reviewing the outline for the practical exam (which I believe MUST remain a part of licensing).. would be very helpful. Schools do their best to assure that students can pas th state exam... but there is a disconnect here... as too many new professionals do not remain in our beautiful business successfully.. many leaving at or before 3 years have passed. Why? Often because the skills they need to satisfy paying clients are not always where they need to be. I am looking for ways to offer "post-graduate" hair color proficiency programs covering technique, formulation, chemistry AND... communication skills so that a successful and clear consultation happens BEFORE people begin heading down a twisted path that leads to failure rather than to a result the client desires. The future of cosmetology will be much more assured if government financial support for cosmetology training continues. B
Because a dedicated Base Breaker product uses a slower alkalizer, we have great control and avoid over-lifting the hair prior to glazing….
My favorite ‘First Step’. Ok: client has virgin hair that is light brown or dark blonde. She wants to be a natural looking warm copper auburn. First: Shampoo and very thoroughly towel dry the hair. Apply Base Breaker ( Schwarzkopf makes a great one). Massage through all the hair very evenly and process for 5-7 minutes. Rinse VERY thoroughly. Light condition and rinse. Again— towel dry well. Now mix and apply Redken Shades E Q… 1 1/2 ounces 6 AA plus 1/2 ounce 8C plus 2 ounces SEQ Processing Solution. (You can use the acidic liquid Demi brand of your choice). Massage in to assure all hair is covered. Process hair for 20 mins at room temp. Then rinse. Light shampoo. Condition. Rinse well. Dry/ style the hair.
This creates a fabulous, super shiny and natural looking copper result. Remember, this technique is for use on virgin hair. Enjoy!
