Micro Afro Spring Twists—Shoulder Length
Hair: Twisted Up Springy Afro Twist 12”
Color: 2T1B/30

My first 6am appointment went well! I was powered by coffee and Jesus 😅

Early appointments can really be a game changer. Once we’re done, you have time to make a grocery run, catch your friends at happy hour, or just head home while the sun is still out.

While it’s still recommended not to make strict plans for later in the day in case we run over time, with an early appointment there is a little more wiggle room to conquer your day…feeling like a new person ✨

While I currently offer bob length and shoulder length micro Afro spring twists, I’ve been dabbling into longer lengths. This 20” Springy Afro Twist from has me contemplating adding a longer length again. The question is would y’all hang out with me all day for this? 🥹

As we reflect on the grand moment of liberation that is Juneteenth, I reflect on a bittersweet moment that reminds me of why I do what I do.

This is my Aunt Pearlie. Five years ago today, she went to be with the Lord at the grand age of 92. She was the sweetest lady, the life of the party, and even though I didn’t meet her until her 70s, I have fond memories of her.

When I got to attend her home going service, I read her eulogy. It was then that I found out that she was a beautician!! I had just launched myself as a braider a couple of months prior, and I wasn’t sure where that was going to take me.

But in that moment, it was so clear that entering the hair industry was a call from God. Several members of my maternal bloodline have been touched with the gift of doing hair, but she was the first person I knew of to make it a career. I decided that day to do my very best to create something that family now and generations after me can claim, a space to let the next future stylists and people in the hair industry thrive in that great gift.

Although I never got to ask her about her career, I firmly believe she thrived just as much as I am now.

Thank you for paving the way, Aunt Pearlie.

I got a whole award!!!!!!

Let me break it down.

As a braider/hairstylist/business owner, I wanted to learn how to run my salon like a business—as I should. So I joined Thrivers Society October 2021. It’s digital education, but the community is so cool. I’m connect to hair friends from all over the country.

One of them nominated me for an award they created this year—Industry Inspiration Award.

If you get braids, you know two things for sure: you may have to prep your hair before your appointment, and you’re fine with just some 1B. Not at The Natural Shoppe.

For the past three years, I’ve been full service because I don’t have to have a cosmetology license to braid hair or shampoo, but I learned how at the salon I worked at. And that’s STILL rare in 2023. I know braiders that shampoo, but many people do not.

Then I have my Black Unicorn Experience—some of the best rainbow braids you’ve ever seen and beyond. Unicorn braids, fairy braids, sparkle braids, you name it, I offer it. It’s a very unique set of services, and I love my color!

I learned some time that your biggest supporters are not going to be the people closest to you. While I do have a great support system in my inner circle, most of my support and patronage are from people that meet me for the first time, fresh eyes that see my work and space and want to be there and pay for that experience. You can’t run a business and people please simultaneously, so I work my butt off to ensure I can built the life I truly want and deserve with a flourishing, robust career to match.

This did my soul really good. I cried a little bit (this was announced virtually) and I saw that my work is indeed not in vain.
