Good morning float fans...Bobbie here.
Today is Trigeminal Neuralgia awareness day. I have lived with Trigeminal Neuralgia since my late 30's. It took years to diagnose, I was labeled a drug seeker, a crazy person and mostly ignored by the medical community. I finally got a diagnosis and found a neurologist who knew how to treat me. Four out five of the cranial nerves on the right side of my face were effected. Eating, talking, brushing my teeth, washing my face, going out in a breeze...all sent me into a wave of electric shock like burning pain. They would last minutes to hours.
In 2010 I had the first brain surgery. A Gamma Knife procedure that purposely damaged the Trigeminal nerve in hopes to stop the pain. It kind of worked but I never fully got off the meds. Eight months after the gamma procedure the pain increased. I decided to have the MVD, Micro Vascular Decompression, a more invasive surgery. I woke up with no pain in my head...I couldn't feel anything...my face felt like you do when novocaine is starting to kick in. The damage done by the gamma effected my face after the MVD. 15 years later I still have numbness on my face...but I have been med free since 2012. I will have to have another MVD eventually. I am no longer pain free. Once the shock pains get unbearable, I will go up to Atlanta and have Dr. Betsy Grunch do the surgery. For now, floating helps, the Soundwave helps, massage helps and Chiropractic adjustment helps... it's almost like I created my very own personal self-care center that I share with anyone willing to give us a try.
I have spent the last 15 years educating and advocating for TN sufferer. I will continue as long as I can.

I did want to talk about men and self-care...Dr. Cooke was telling his brother he was going for a float and massage after. His brother started teasing him about having a spa day...I, of course, gave the brother grief about outdated attitudes. I did look at our client list. We have just as many men come in as we do women. People come in for many reasons; muscle recovery, autoimmune management, relaxation...I could go on. Bottom line, we have to take care of ourselves, both men and women. Our practice is set up to help you keep moving, sleep better, get pain relief... whatever your reason, we are here for you.
