Sometimes the right treatment is no treatment at all.

Every healthcare provider is trained to look for certain things. But knowing what you treat should also mean knowing when not to treat it.

That’s why assessment matters.

If our examination doesn't give us evidence that the problem we're looking for is actually there, we're not going to treat something just because a patient walked through our door.

Sometimes that means saying:

“I don't think I'm the right doctor for you.”

And when possible, helping that person figure out where they should go next.

The goal isn't to find a reason to treat everyone.

The goal is to understand what's happening and determine the appropriate next step.

Feeling better matters. We want you to feel better.

But how you feel on one particular day doesn't always tell us the whole story.

That's one reason we establish measurable findings during an initial examination. As care progresses, we can repeat those same evaluations and look for change.

Not everything changes overnight. Different problems have different timelines.

But over an appropriate amount of time, we want to see two things moving in the right direction:

How you feel—and what we can measure.

Because meaningful progress should be more than a good day.

“I guess I’m just getting old.”

We hear that explanation for aches, pains, stiffness, and other changes all the time.

And yes—our bodies change as we age. But there’s an important distinction:

There’s a difference between usual and normal.

Something becoming more common as we get older doesn’t necessarily mean that age itself is the reason it’s happening.

Our injuries, habits, activity, repetitive stresses, and years of wear and tear all contribute to how our bodies change.

So instead of automatically asking, “Is this just because I’m getting older?”

It may be more useful to ask:

“Why is this happening to me?”

“It doesn’t hurt. It’s just numb.”

It's easy to dismiss a change in sensation when it isn't painful.

But pain isn't the only way your body communicates that something has changed. Persistent or recurring numbness deserves attention too.

Rather than waiting for something to hurt, ask a different question:

Why does this feel different than it used to?

Sometimes the first step is simply recognizing that a change is worth investigating.

Your body is communicating. Pay attention to the changes.

“I was told I just have to live with it.”

We hear this from people with neuropathy more often than we’d like.

Sometimes there are changes that can't be reversed. But before assuming nothing can be done, we think there's an important question to ask:

What’s contributing to the neuropathy in the first place?

That’s why we start with an evaluation. We want to understand what’s happening, what may be contributing to it, and whether there’s an opportunity to help.

You may not know the answer until you look.

Something bothering you for a long time can start to feel like something you simply have to live with.

But the length of time you've had a problem doesn't necessarily tell us whether it can change.

An old injury, chronic muscle tension, arthritis, accumulated stress on the body—different problems persist for different reasons. And understanding why something is still happening matters.

Sometimes longstanding problems take longer to respond. Sometimes there are changes that can't be reversed.

But “I've had it for years” isn't, by itself, the answer.

Your body is communicating. It may be worth asking what it's trying to tell you.

“I’ve had this for years. Why would anything change now?”

It’s an understandable question—especially when pain or another problem has been part of your life for a long time.

But longstanding doesn’t necessarily mean permanent.

How long something has been happening is important, but so is why it’s happening. Chronic muscle tension, an old injury, arthritis, accumulated stress on the body—different problems can have very different reasons for sticking around.

And that means they may have different potential for change.

Sometimes a problem that has been there for years will take more time to respond. Sometimes there are changes we can’t reverse. But the age of the problem alone doesn’t tell us what’s possible.

That’s why we start by trying to understand what’s actually happening.

Don’t let “I’ve had it for years” be the only reason you stop asking questions.

What are you looking at?

These are actual thermal images taken as part of a neuropathy evaluation.

The colors represent differences in surface temperature. Thermal imaging doesn't directly measure blood flow, but temperature patterns can give us additional information about circulation and how the body is regulating blood flow to different areas.

And that's exactly what we're looking for: information.

Because neuropathy isn't evaluated with one picture, one symptom, or one test.

We want to understand the bigger picture—sensation, balance, function, symptoms, history, temperature patterns and what may be contributing to the changes you're experiencing.

We don't treat a picture. We use the information to better understand the person.

And ultimately, we're trying to answer one important question:

Is there an opportunity to help?

When something hurts, it's hard to ignore.

Numbness can be different.

Over time, it can become surprisingly easy to accept less sensation in your feet or hands as simply part of getting older—or something you just have to live with.

But numbness is still information.

Changes in sensation can happen when the nerves responsible for carrying information between your body and brain aren't functioning normally. And neuropathy can show up in different ways: numbness, tingling, burning, sensitivity, weakness, or changes in balance.

That's why we don't think the question should simply be, “How much does it hurt?”

We also want to know:

What has changed? How long has it been changing? And what is your body no longer doing the way it used to?

Your body is communicating—even when what you're noticing is less feeling.
