Ancient Times (before the word existed)
• People in Africa, India, and the Middle East wore their hair in naturally locked styles.
• No word like “dreadlocks” was used — the style was simply part of spiritual, cultural, or practical life.
1800s – Early 1900s
• Enslaved Africans in the Americas sometimes had hair that naturally locked due to limited access to grooming tools.
• European colonizers and enslavers described it as “unkempt” or “dreadful.”
1930s–1940s (Birth of Rastafarian Movement in Jamaica)
• Rastafarians began wearing locs as a spiritual practice: rejecting European standards and honoring their African identity.
• The word “dread” came from “living in dread of God” (deep reverence).
• Outsiders twisted it to mean “dreadful locks,” associating the style with danger and rebellion.
1960s–1970s (Global Exposure)
• Thanks to figures like Bob Marley, the term “dreadlocks” spread globally.
• Many embraced the style, but the stigma lingered — workplaces, schools, and governments often banned or policed “dreadlocks.”
1980s–1990s
• In Black communities, people began reclaiming and reframing the style.
• Activists, scholars, and natural hair movements challenged the negative word “dread.”
• Some began dropping “dread” and saying “locks” or “locs” instead.
2000s–2010s (Natural Hair Movement)
• Social media and natural hair advocacy pushed the term “locs” into wider use.
• Many argued: Why should our hair be called dreadful?
• Locs became celebrated as symbols of pride, resistance, and beauty.
2020s–2025 (Today)
• The term “locs” is now the most culturally respectful and widely used.
• “Dreadlocks” still exists (especially in historical, Rastafarian, or casual contexts), but locs is the preferred word in most Black communities.
• The shift is part of reclaiming language and rejecting colonial descriptions.
