1. See your dental hygienist every 6 months for your routine dental cleanings.

2. Brush AND floss daily.

3. Use whitening toothpaste.

4. Avoid foods and drinks likely to stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red w**e, pasta sauce, etc.

Does tooth whitening cause sensitivity, or will it make my already sensitive teeth even more sensitive?

This is probably THE most asked question I get! And the short response is…..potentially. But, continue reading to see why this is, and what we can do to minimize any potential sensitivity!

Tooth whitening is opening up the pores of the teeth so that we can access the inner most layer of the tooth, the dentin, and whiten from the inside out. This process has the potential to cause some temporary tooth sensitivity. If this does happen it tends to be isolated to certain areas, and not all over sensitivity.

If you are one of the few to experience sensitivity it typically is for the 24 hours immediately following treatment only. This is while the pores of the teeth are closing back up after treatment.

What can we do to help prevent sensitivity? Several things!

* The intensity of the whitening lamp can be adjusted for optimal comfort during and post procedure

* Drinking plenty of room temperature water can help to rehydrate your teeth post procedure

* Using Sensodyne (I’ll send you home with a sample) toothpaste for the couple of days post procedure

* Use the remineralizer and desensitizer that I will send you home with as needed

* Tylenol or Advil if needed (this has been needed in very rare circumstances)

* Use high quality whitening gels that are not full of chemicals
