That instant white āfrostingā you see during laser tattoo removal? Thereās actually some pretty cool science behind it. My clients know I LOVE to over explain things š
As an RN, I want my clients to understand what weāre seeing in the skinānot just what the laser is doing.
The whitening is an immediate laser-tissue response.
When the laser delivers an ultra-short pulse of energy, the tattoo pigment absorbs that energy extremely quickly. This creates a rapid photoacoustic effect that helps disrupt the pigment into smaller particles.
The sudden pressure change also creates microscopic gas/vapor bubbles in the superficial tissue, which temporarily scatter light and give us that characteristic white or āfrostedā appearance.
A few important things to know:
āØ It appears almost immediately after the laser pulse
āØ It is temporary and typically resolves quickly
āØ It can help us assess the immediate tissue response during treatment
āØ More frosting does not necessarily mean a better treatment
āØ It does not mean the ink disappeared instantly
The laser starts the processābut your body does the clearing.
Over the following weeks, your immune system gradually processes and clears disrupted pigment particles. That biological process is one of the reasons adequate healing time between treatments matters so much.
The frosting happens in seconds.
