This week's Treatment vs. Trending features ice rolling and frozen cucumbers.
Cold therapy has been part of skincare for a long time, but lately social media has given it a few new twists. Chilled rollers and even frozen cucumbers promise everything from a less puffy morning face to tighter, more sculpted skin. But how much can a little cold actually do?
This week, we're taking a closer look at what current research says, where cold therapy really fits into skincare, and when a cool idea starts making some pretty frosty claims.

How often should you exfoliate?
I wish I could give you a tidy little answer like "twice a week," but your skin has once again refused to be that cooperative.
How often you should exfoliate depends on what you're using, how strong it is, what else is in your routine, and what your skin is doing right now. Someone using a gentle exfoliant occasionally has a very different routine from someone using retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, peels, or a combination of several of them.
And that's where things can get sneaky. You may not think you're exfoliating very often because you're only reaching for your "exfoliator" once or twice a week, but another daily product in your routine is also increasing cell turnover or providing exfoliation without you realizing it. Suddenly your twice-a-week habit has a whole entourage.
More isn't necessarily better. Too much exfoliation can disrupt the skin barrier, leaving skin feeling tight, dry, sensitive, itchy, or unusually reactive. You may notice redness, flaking, stinging when you apply products that normally feel perfectly fine, or even an increase in breakouts. Once the barrier is compromised, the skin can lose water more easily and become more vulnerable to irritation, which means the answer usually isn't another exfoliating product to get rid of the flakes.
So instead of asking how often everyone should exfoliate, ask a better question: how much exfoliation does my skin need?

The best way to exfoliate isn't necessarily to scrub harder.
Introducing the skin scrubber. Despite the name, there's very little "scrubbing" involved. This little tool uses ultrasonic vibrations as the flat metal blade moves across damp skin, helping lift away loosened surface buildup without relying on abrasive particles, aggressive rubbing, or stronger chemical formulations.
It's just one of the many different exfoliation methods available in the treatment room. Not every face needs the same thing, and even the same person's skin may need something different from one visit to the next. Sometimes a masque or peel makes sense. Sometimes the skin scrubber or other exfoliation device is a better fit. Sometimes the best choice is to leave exfoliation alone altogether.
The skin scrubber pulls double duty by helping loosen debris in areas where congestion likes to collect, especially around the nose where buildup tends to settle into all those little nooks and crannies. Like every tool in my treatment room, though, your skin has a say in what comes out to play. Each tool has a purpose, and knowing when not to use one is just as important as knowing how to use it.
Good skincare doesn't need brute force. Sometimes a lighter touch does the job beautifully.

Good exfoliation is about more than scrubbing.
This week's Product Spotlight is one of the exfoliating masques you'll find in my back bar. I like it because it gives me another option for removing dull surface buildup and refining the look and feel of the skin without treating exfoliation like a competition to see how much we can scrub away. And just because it's called AGELESS doesn't mean you have to be "of a certain age" to benefit from it. Your dead skin cells do not check your birth certificate.
When I'm choosing how to exfoliate during a facial, I'm looking at your skin first. What does it need today? How much exfoliation can it comfortably handle? Would it benefit from resurfacing, or is today a day when your barrier would prefer that I leave well enough alone?
Professional exfoliation isn't about making your face as smooth as humanly possible before you leave the table. It's about choosing the right method, the right intensity, and the right time while respecting the skin underneath. Even though smooth skin is lovely, healthy skin is even better.

Smooth skin isn't always happy skin.
One of the easiest traps to fall into with skincare is assuming that if something leaves your face feeling incredibly smooth, it must have worked. That immediate result can be pretty convincing, even with professional exfoliating products. But sometimes that smooth feeling comes from removing more from the surface of your skin than it actually needed to lose.
A better habit is to pay attention to how your skin behaves after that immediate result wears off. Skin that feels tight, dry, itchy, sensitive, or suddenly reactive later in the day may be telling you that your barrier wasn't nearly as impressed with your new routine as you were.
This is especially important when experimenting with DIY mixtures made from common household ingredients. Something doesn't have to burn or hurt while you're using it to cause irritation or disrupt your skin barrier, and an immediate cosmetic result doesn't necessarily mean your skin benefited from it.
So when you're deciding whether an exfoliating product or skincare trick is actually working, don't judge it only by those first few minutes in the mirror. Give your skin time to cast its vote. Then, listen to what it tells you. And if you’re not quite sure what it’s saying, come see me. We’ll figure it out together.

“Crystal, your Cottage is childish.”
“Crystal, it isn’t very sophisticated.”
“Crystal, why a pink, whimsical cottage for serious skin work?”
Well… because I like it.
I like pink. I like flowers. I like little cottage details that feel like they wandered out of a storybook. I like creating a space that feels warm and a little magical instead of sleek, beige, clinical, and painfully grown-up.
And for a while, I wondered if I was doing it wrong.
There is a certain look we associate with “professional,” especially in skincare. Clean lines. Neutral colors. Minimal decor. Black, gray, or beige scrubs. Everything polished enough to reassure you that the person holding the serum definitely understands the epidermis.
But my surroundings don't determine how seriously I take my work.
I can love a ridiculous amount of pink and still understand skin physiology. I can put flowers on the walls and still spend my time studying ingredients, modalities, treatments, and continuing my education.
I can build something whimsical without building something frivolous.
Maybe I’m just in my soft girl era after spending 15 years in military uniforms. I did my time in muted colors. Let me have the damn flowers.
As The Pamper Cottage moves into its new home and grows beyond skincare into a beauty and body studio, I could use the expansion to make the Cottage more “sophisticated,” more “acceptable in the industry,” more “clean lines and muted colors.”
Instead, I’m going to make it even more Cottage. Even more whimsical. Even more storybook chic.
More flowers. More color. More softness. More femininity. More personality.
Because professionalism was never supposed to mean stripping all the personality out of a place. It’s supposed to mean showing up with the knowledge, skill, ethics, and standards to do your job well.
The Pamper Cottage doesn't need to be beige, sterile, or clinical for me to know what the hell I'm doing.
And if sitting in a pink storybook cottage while receiving knowledgeable, professional skin and body care is childish?
Fine.
I’ve been called worse.

This week's Treatment vs. Trending features baby oil and baking soda.
This DIY combination has been making the rounds on social media with some pretty impressive claims about what it can do for aging skin. Both ingredients are inexpensive, easy to find, and probably already familiar to most of us. But does combining them actually offer any benefit to your skin?
This week, we're taking a closer look at what each ingredient actually does, what current research tells us, and whether this viral combination deserves a place in your skincare routine.

A little “before” moment from what might just become The Pamper Cottage’s next chapter. Yesterday, we stepped inside this sweet little space in the Village of West Greenville to take measurements, make plans, and start imagining what it could become.
Right now, it’s a lot of blank walls, empty rooms, and possibilities. But I can already see the pink, lavender, cream, and sage. I can see the white wicker furniture. I can see the treatment room taking shape, the Cottage details finding their places, and a whole lot more room for the things I’ve been dreaming about adding.
There are still a few details to work through before I can officially call it ours, so I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself.
Trying. 😂
But I thought you might like to see the “before,” just in case we get to watch this little place become a Cottage together.

Can My Skin Be Oily and Dehydrated at the Same Time? Absolutely. And it’s more common than you might think.
Oily/dry and hydrated/dehydrated describe two different things. Oily or dry refers to how much sebum your skin produces. Hydrated or dehydrated refers to how much water your skin is holding. So yes, your skin can produce plenty of oil while still lacking the water it needs, and vice versa.
That can look like skin that gets shiny throughout the day but also feels tight after cleansing, looks a little dull, or has fine lines that seem more noticeable than usual. You may even find yourself reaching for stronger cleansers or skipping moisturizer because your skin already feels oily, which can sometimes make the dehydration worse.
The answer usually isn’t to strip away more oil. Dehydrated skin needs water and support. Gentle cleansing, hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, and a moisturizer that helps reduce water loss can all help restore a healthier balance.
And if you’re not sure whether you’re dealing with oiliness, dehydration, or a little of both? That’s exactly the kind of thing we look at during a skin analysis at the Cottage.
