This one might ruffle some feathers, but I’ve had some big thoughts & opinions lately…

In the clean beauty industry, we have been programmed to believe that the term “synthetic” is a bad word. But when used thoughtfully and carefully, certain synthetic ingredients can become synonymous with SAFETY.
Clean skincare doesn’t have to mean 100% natural.

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that natural ingredients are ALWAYS better and synthetic ingredients are something to avoid.

The truth? Skin doesn’t distinguish between an ingredient’s marketing story and its chemistry.

What matters is how an ingredient functions, how well it has been studied, its safety at the concentration used, and how it works within the finished formula.

Thoughtfully selected synthetics can help skincare remain stable, protect against contamination, improve texture, and deliver consistent results. We want all of that without the toxic load and it’s not only possible, it’s available!

For me, clean skincare is about choosing ingredients with intention—not eliminating an entire category of ingredients simply because of how they’re made.

It’s not about natural versus synthetic. It’s about formulation, safety, and performance.

One example of this is salicylic acid which can support gentle exfoliation and has antimicrobial properties which keeps the product from growing yeast and mold. We certainly don’t want to be rubbing those into our skin everyday!

There’s also the aspect of natural and botanical ingredients causing allergic reactions in sensitive skin types. Just because an ingredient comes from nature doesn’t mean it will be benign for everyone. Even something as simple as lavender can cause irritation issues so it’s important to patch test for sensitivity no matter what you choose to put on your skin.

One story I’ve heard over and over again throughout the years is, “I’ve always had pretty great skin so I pretty much just use drugstore skin care” But then they lay on my bed and list out 10 complaints that they have about their skin. I always tell people that if they love what they’re using and they’re happy with the results, I’m never gonna take those things away from them! However, if they’re coming to me with skin problems, and looking for an answer, it may just be that the things that used to work in the past don’t work for their skin now. And that’s when I will take it back to the basics, introducing one item at a time to create an easy to follow routine that doesn’t feel overwhelming, and that routine is rarely going to include drugstore items, not because I want to charge you more money, but because I want to offer you clean alternatives that actually give you the results you’ve been looking for.
