Together, we are raising awareness and empowering our community in the fight against lupus and breast cancer.

The Black Butterfly Foundation was founded on January 29, 2015 by a family affected with lupus since the early 1950's. With five family members who are currently living with the disease and six who lost their battle, the foundation's goal is to increase awareness of the lupus disease and assist in raising money to find a cure. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body such as the skin, joints or organs. In lupus, something goes wrong with the immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs. The cause of lupus remains unknown, but there is solid evidence that hormones, genetics and environmental factors play a role. There is no known cure for lupus, but current treatments focus on improving the quality of life through controlling symptoms and minimizing flare-ups. On August 3, 2018, the Black Butterfly Foundation added Breast Cancer to the fight and has worked diligently to assist in raising awareness of the two diseases. Breast cancer occurs when cells begin to grow abnormally in the breast. There are many risk factors for breast cancer, but researchers believe that hormonal, lifestyle and environmental factors increase your risk. Due to early detection and personalized treatment, the breast cancer survival rate has increased and survivors are living a long and healthier life. The vision of the Black Butterfly Foundation is to join the fight against lupus and breast cancer by increasing awareness in the community. The mission of the Black Butterfly Foundation is to plan and implement annual events/activities to increase awareness and solicit volunteers and/or donors to support the causes.

đź’śMental Health & Lupus (SLE) in the African American Communityđź’ś
African American individuals—especially women—experience Lupus (SLE) at higher rates and with more severe symptoms. This increased disease burden is closely linked to higher levels of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress.

These mental health challenges are intensified by factors such as systemic inequities in healthcare, racism‑related stress, limited social support, and barriers to effective communication with providers. Despite this elevated risk, African American patients with SLE are less likely to receive a diagnosis or treatment for depression, leaving many without needed support.
Raising awareness of these disparities is essential to improving access to culturally responsive care, strengthening mental health resources, and ensuring equitable outcomes for those living with Lupus.

đź’śđź’śThis Mattersđź’śđź’ś
Lupus is not only a physical disease—it affects the whole person. Mental health challenges can worsen disease activity, reduce quality of life, and create barriers to consistent care. Addressing these disparities requires:
• Culturally responsive healthcare
• Improved communication and trust between patients and providers
• Greater access to mental health resources
• Community education and advocacy
• Policies that address social determinants of health
Raising awareness is a critical step toward ensuring African American women living with lupus receive equitable, compassionate, and comprehensive care—physically, emotionally, and socially.

By sharing this information, we help raise awareness, encourage early intervention, and advocate for more equitable care for those living with Lupus. Let’s continue to uplift, educate, and support our community. 💜
