Workshop Wednesday: From Garden to Jar
This is what we’ve been waiting for.
Our little urban garden has finally produced enough , , basil, clary sage, sage, peel, and chamomile for us to start experimenting with our own botanically infused tallow balms at Acceptional Things.
We’ll carefully infuse selected botanicals into tallow and jojoba oil, then begin testing different blends and formulations.
But this is about more than making a new product.
This is a glimpse of the connection between Acceptional Things and Acceptional Acres .
Today, these are growing in a small . Someday, we envision many of them growing at Acceptional Acres tended, harvested, dried, and transformed into products by exceptional people.
Grow it at Acceptional Acres.
Create with it at Acceptional Things.
Build meaningful work, purpose, and belonging along the way.
The jars may still be a little empty…but to us, they look like the beginning of something pretty big.
workshopwednesday is about to get interesting. c
This is more than soap.

INGREDIENT THURSDAY: FRESH ALOE
This week, I’ve been experimenting with something new in the Acceptional Things studio: fresh aloe straight from the leaf.
And it turns out there’s a little more to it than just cutting open a leaf and scooping out the gel.
See that yellow/brown color in the water? 😮
Aloe leaves contain a yellow latex just beneath the outer rind that contains aloin, so I’ve been experimenting with carefully preparing and soaking the fresh aloe before using the clear inner gel.
Why all the experimenting?
I want to see if I can successfully use fresh aloe as part of the liquid in our handmade soaps rather than simply reaching for a commercially prepared aloe ingredient.
But there’s another reason I’m working with fresh aloe: I’m thinking about the future of Acceptional Acres
If we’re able to grow aloe on the Acres someday, I want to understand how to prepare and use it now. That way, we can learn through the experimenting process and hopefully create something meaningful with aloe grown right here on our own land.
Will it work?
That’s what experiments are for. 😂
A little nature. 🌿
A little chemistry. 🧪
A little planning for the future. 🌱
And probably a few batches that don’t go exactly according to plan. 🤦🏼♀️
I’ll show you what happens!

Ever wonder what goes into a batch of our ?
It starts out looking like a bunch of that have absolutely no business becoming lotion…and then a little chemistry happens.
Measured. Mixed. Emulsified. And made in right here at Acceptional Things.
We think watching it come together might be almost as satisfying as using it.

Our production studio is still down for remodeling so Alex is working on skills. We started with adding a few extra items that don’t go in the box and color coding quantities and item names. All packed up and ready to go. Thank you Kayla for your order, and for helping us for and other developmental disabilities. Alex REALLY wanted to use his beloved to close the box 😂
While we wait for Acceptional Acres to be built we are so thankful for who and Aloe is a key ingredient in all the things we make so it’s first on the list for trials with fresh and we are going to try our hand with as well. Stay tuned for the results!
