On this day in 1980, Dallas delivered one of the most famous cliffhangers in television history with the season finale A House Divided, ending with J.R. Ewing being shot in his office by an unseen attacker. The episode aired on CBS on March 21, 1980, and turned a prime-time soap into a full-blown international obsession almost overnight.

What made it work so brilliantly was that J.R. was exactly the sort of character viewers loved to hate. He was ruthless, scheming, arrogant and forever double-crossing somebody, so by the time he was left sprawled on the floor, there was no shortage of suspects. Family members, business enemies and betrayed lovers all had reasons to want him gone, which kept the mystery bubbling away for months.

The phrase “Who shot J.R.?” quickly escaped the show itself and became a genuine pop-culture craze. It dominated newspapers, office chatter and TV coverage through the long wait for the answer, helped even more by the 1980 actors’ strike, which stretched the suspense far beyond an ordinary summer break.
