How can humming, and using the “voo” sound, affect systems throughout the body? To start with, participating in the activity is much more effective than reading about it. I would invite you to take a steady breath in. Upon exhalation, make the Voo sound in different tones, different pitches, while breathing out slowly. You might even explore different shapes with your lips and mouth. See if you can move the tone and vibration through out your body from your mouth, heart, lungs, gut, to your pelvic floor, and just see what happens as you pause afterwards. Repeat 2-3 times. You may be able to find a tone and vibration in a particular area that seems somewhat soothing. You may begin to regulate your oxygen / carbon dioxide relationship. Stop if it gets to be too much. Don’t trip.
The vagus nerve innervates a wide range of visceral organs including the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines (most of the upper gastrointestinal tract), esophagus, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and parts of the large intestine; essentially providing parasympathetic innervation to most abdominal organs.

"Many therapists consider touch of any kind to be inappropriate with clients who have been abused through violations of the body. At the same time however, many therapists and all somatic therapists believe that a client will have great difficulty in fully recovering from such trauma if only verbal or cognitive approaches to therapy are used. As Hunter and Struve (1998) surmise, “Therapeutic efforts to help a client heal from touch-related wounds ultimately ought to include experiential approaches that directly access the body and that provide the client with real-life opportunities to feel nonabusive touch” (p. 218). Clients traumatized in childhood are often unable to make distinctions between affectionate touch and sexual touch (Ball, 2002). “Healing is unlikely to occur if this positive and appropriate touch remains only an idea or intellectual concept” (Hunter & Struve, 1998, p. 218). In a study done by Horton and colleagues (1995), it was found that sexually abused clients were more likely to attribute a corrective or educative role to touch in therapy and to report feeling “touchable”, “lovable” or generally better about themselves as a result of touch than were non-abused clients. Of the clients in this study who reported a history of sexual and/or physical abuse and neglect, 71% wrote that touch repaired self-esteem, trust, and a sense of their own power or agency, especially in setting limits and asking for what they need."

Do you know your ANS? It's been so wonderful to meet people in this way and work with the Polyvagal system as we touch in on concepts of safety and connection, building capacity, tolerance and ultimately joy, perhaps, for experiences in this world. Meeting the way we feel the things that come up, and working with what feel true.
Trauma and the Nervous System: A Polyvagal Perspective This video was developed to give a basic introduction and overview of how trauma and chronic stress affects our nervous system and how those effects impact o...

Let's do inventory! This week we'll be zooming out from the human experience just a little bit, seeing a broader perspective. We'll work on noticing a more generalized sense of "Difficult Emotions".
In the past few weeks we've been zoomed in; we've read, and sat with, and spoke about the concept of "hope", and the concept of "support".
Tonight we'll start with a settling exercise. We'll then talk a bit about some concepts of 'difficult emotions'. We'll then go on to a short meditation, followed by a 15 minute silent journal exercise about three specific areas of how and where difficult emotions have been noticed in our lives, how we work with this, and how it serves us. We will then move on to an opportunity to share if it feels right and demonstrate community support with others in the room. 1 hr total.
We can look at when difficult emotions have actually served us, and we might also notice when difficult emotions have been destructive in our lives and the lives of others. We can look at tools and techniques, and share ideas about how difficult emotions have been worked with in our own lives. We'll touch on noticing the narrative in our experience; in the past, present, and future.
We may look at: personal relationships, work, generational trauma, society, expectations, habits, and more, perhaps. A broad spectrum, without the fine details of the event involved in storytelling. No cheerleading, no hijacking, no fixing.
There is no cost for this community service meet up. Please bring some paper and a writing utensil. If you have a favorite meditation cushion you might choose to bring that. There's not much that's needed in the external environment perhaps. You can just bring yourself, and maybe a friend, and a willingness to be with others in the community that may have a shared experience.
