🎓 Fayetteville State University Secures $10 Million For A.I. and Defense Research

🤖 Fayetteville State University has secured a $10 million federal research award to establish a new interdisciplinary program focused on applied artificial intelligence, defense systems, contested logistics and biomanufacturing.

🏆 FSU is one of only five institutions nationwide selected for the five-year program, which will provide approximately $2 million annually. The investment will expand research opportunities for faculty and students while also supporting the university’s plans for a doctoral program in applied artificial intelligence.

🎓 A major part of the award is student involvement. Undergraduate and graduate students will have opportunities to work directly alongside faculty researchers, giving them experience in areas including artificial intelligence, data science, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology and logistics before entering the workforce.

💻 Those skills also extend well beyond military applications. Artificial intelligence and advanced data systems are increasingly used in health care, transportation, manufacturing, business operations, supply-chain management and other industries, giving students experience that could translate into a wide range of careers.

🇺🇸 Fayetteville’s proximity to Fort Bragg could make the research especially significant locally. FSU plans to work closely with the installation as the program develops, strengthening connections among higher education, military research, private companies and the region’s growing defense and technology sectors.

🚚 One of the research areas, contested logistics, focuses on maintaining transportation and supply systems in difficult or disrupted environments. Research in that field can also have broader applications involving emergency response, disaster planning, supply chains and the movement of critical resources when normal systems are interrupted.

🔬 The funding also gives FSU an opportunity to build research infrastructure that lasts beyond the initial five years. Adding faculty expertise, expanding laboratories and student research, developing a doctoral program and producing more advanced research could help the university compete for additional federal funding and partnerships in the future.

📈 For Fayetteville and Cumberland County, the impact could eventually reach beyond the university campus. A larger research presence can help develop a highly skilled local workforce, attract technology and defense partnerships and create additional opportunities for businesses connected to AI, logistics, manufacturing and national security.

🏙️ Local leaders have increasingly discussed connecting Fayetteville State University, Fort Bragg, Fayetteville Technical Community College, the Military Business Park and other regional organizations into a larger defense and innovation economy. This award gives FSU a significant new role in that effort.
