Lice eggs are tiny, and surprisingly easy to miss.
Nits can blend in with the hair, are firmly attached to the hair shaft, and can be especially difficult to spot during a quick check.
That’s why a thorough lice check means small sections, good lighting, and a close look near the scalp.

A lice notice from school can turn an ordinary day into instant panic.
But take a breath. A school lice notice doesn’t mean your family did anything wrong, and it doesn’t mean your child definitely has lice.
Head lice spread most often through close, head-to-head contact, which can happen during play, sports, group activities, and other everyday moments at school.
So what should you actually do when that notice comes home? Check, know what to look for, and have a plan.

When it comes to lice prevention, you don’t have to avoid every crowded place.
Instead, pay attention to the close-contact moments in your child’s day, sleepovers, playtime, team huddles, selfies, or any situation where heads and hair are close together.
Lice spread primarily through direct hair-to-hair contact, so knowing when those moments happen can help families focus their prevention efforts where they matter most.

Urban Density Lice Spread Mitigation Close-contact routines can create opportunities for head lice to spread in busy communities. See practical ways families can reduce everyday exposure.

Unlike dandruff, a nit doesn’t simply brush or wash away. Lice produce a cement-like substance that firmly attaches each egg to the hair shaft, making them surprisingly difficult to remove.
That’s one reason a thorough lice check and removal involves more than just looking for crawling bugs. You have to know what you’re looking for, and where to look.

Can lice hide in thick or curly hair?
They can definitely be harder to spot! Lice don’t care what your hair type is, but dense, curly, or heavily styled hair can make a quick visual check more challenging.
That’s why a thorough lice check means sectioning the hair and looking closely near the scalp, not just giving the hair a quick glance.
Because sometimes, the hardest part is finding what’s hiding in plain sight.
Lice can easily get lost among strands of hair and blend in, especially when you’re doing a quick check.
That’s why a thorough check means parting the hair into small sections and looking closely at the scalp and individual strands.

Your hair can hold clues about a lice infestation.
As hair grows, nits (lice eggs) move farther away from the scalp. That means their position on the hair shaft can sometimes give clues about when they were laid, with nits closer to the scalp generally more likely to be recent.
Of course, nit placement isn’t an exact timeline, but it can be one helpful clue when checking for lice.

Lice and nits can be easy to miss, so make sure you’re checking these commonly overlooked areas:
Front of the hairline
Crown of the head
Behind the ears
Back of the neck
Part the hair into small sections and check carefully near the scalp and along the hair shaft. A thorough check can make all the difference!
