The awakened mind is sometimes a guide to places as wondrous as they are terrifying and lonely.

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you know my opinion of the truth: if it makes your as***le tight, you need to hear it.

So here’s some truth: boundaries are only an issue for people who don’t know how to respect them. If anyone wonders why they aren’t part of my life anymore, there’s the answer.

I don’t expect the Universe—or anyone—to give me anything. I’m definitely not saying that a person’s position in my life is defined by the things they can give to me or do for me. In fact, I welcome challenging ideas, difficult conversations, or requests for my help as much as I welcome compassion, community, and grace.

I’m not a saint. I don’t claim to be. My reputation isn’t as sterling as some people believe I think it is. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve made a fool of myself, and I’ve hurt people. I’ve made amends and reparations when I could.

I’m not trying to be an icon any more than I’m trying to be an as***le, but I’ve spent my entire life in service to others, pouring into cups that weren’t mine. Something I am extremely proud of, btw.

But I get exactly one shot at the rest of this bu****it we call life.

My time and my energy are not renewable resources.

I am not a renewable resource.

If it doesn’t contribute to—that is to say, enrich—my life, my livelihood, my peace, my happiness, my stability, I don’t fu***ng want it.

Good hair and a student budget can coexist. 🎓✨

I will never forget September 11th, 2001. I remember being in the fourth grade, and our homeroom teacher had escorted us to Art Class. The school was quieter that day. We walked into the Art room and the lights were off, the tv was on, and Mrs. White had unlocked the cabinets for all the supplies. She said “make art if you want, but this is important”. No formal art lesson that day.

I was a fourth grader. I had no clue what was happening on the tv. I knew it was bad though. Parents were collecting kids from school early. I learned a lot of new words very quickly. “Terrorism”. “Patriotism.” “War.”

The significance of that moment in the fourth grade never really hit me until I visited the Ground Zero Memorial in New York City when I was 17.

Okay guys, on the count of 3, let’s all say “Thank you, Evan” for making me feel like a human again.
