#Pressplay (swipe) A New Jersey man is sharing a story from his sophomore year at Irvington High School that he says still gives him chills decades later.

After transferring from private school to public school, he struggled with using his locker and began carrying all of his books in one backpack. The unexpected result? He was always first in line for lunch, earning the nickname “Lunch Man” among classmates from every social circle.

At the time, tensions and violence among local groups of students had become a growing concern, and tragic incidents involving young people were becoming far too common.

One afternoon while walking home from school, he says a group of young men approached him, with one allegedly pulling out a weapon and pointing it directly at him. Believing his life was about to end, he stood frozen as the group closed in.

Then, according to his account, someone in the group recognized him.

“Don’t do it, that’s Lunch Man!”

The mood instantly changed. Instead of violence, he says he was greeted with handshakes, hugs, and apologies before the group went on their way.

Still shaken, he remained frozen for several minutes before finally making it home.

“It was the one time being Lunch Man saved the day,” he recalled.
