Indoor lighting can hide a shade that is too pink, too yellow, too light or too dark. That is why I look at your overall skin tone, undertone, neck and chest instead of matching your foundation to your wrist or a bathroom selfie.

The right shade should move naturally with your skin not reveal a separate face floating above your neck.

If your foundation looks dry, uneven, separated or patchy, the foundation may not be the first thing we need to blame.

Beautiful makeup application begins with properly prepared skin.

Before applying foundation, make sure your skin has the hydration and support it needs. If your skin is dry or dehydrated, foundation can cling to rough areas, settle into fine lines or look uneven instead of blending smoothly.

Apply your skincare in the proper order and give each step time to do its job. Hydrating products need time to absorb into the skin. Eye cream needs time to settle around the delicate eye area. Moisturizer needs time to create a comfortable, supported surface instead of sitting on top of the skin.

Your sunscreen should be the final step in your skincare routine before primer and foundation. Sunscreen is skincare, so it needs time to absorb and settle before you begin applying makeup. Rushing from skincare directly into foundation can cause pilling, separation or an uneven application.

Once your skincare has absorbed, apply primer if you use one and allow that to settle as well. Then apply your foundation in thin, intentional layers. Start with a small amount, blend it well and add coverage only where you need it instead of applying a heavy layer everywhere.

The goal is not to cover your skin with more product. The goal is to create a smooth, hydrated, comfortable canvas that allows your foundation to look natural and skin-like.

If your makeup is looking dry or patchy, the solution may not be more foundation. It may be better hydration, more supportive skincare, enough time for your products to absorb or a gentler approach to exfoliation.

Your skin does not need to be rushed. Let each step do its job before adding the next one.
