I used to spend so much time in the sun; I never feared skin cancer despite strict warnings given to me by my mother and any other professional. After living in the Sunshine State for a few years and exposing my skin to South Florida’s harmful UV rays, I found out I had melanoma! Cancer is a scary word! Thankfully, the cancer was removed with surgery and I didn’t require any type of chemotherapy or other cancer treatments. I have since learned the importance of limiting sun exposure and wearing sunscreen! Melanoma was not the only ‘gift’ my years of sun exposure and tanning beds gave me; unfortunately (as I learned in school and now am seeing in real life) much of the damage caused by exposure to the sun’s harmful rays doesn’t materialize until later on in life…. And at that point, there’s no reversing the clock. My face bears the fine lines and pigmentation issues cause by sun exposure. While I can’t undo all the harm I’ve caused to my skin, I can minimize the appearance of the sun damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and lighten hyperpigmentation (dark patches on the skin). Moreover, I can do myself a favor by wearing a strong SPF sunscreen and avoid exposing my skin to the sun during peak hours. Chances are, if you’re living in South Florida, your skin has been exposed to more than its fair share of harmful sun rays. If you have any suspicious moles, a dermatologist will need to take a look at your skin. But as an esthetician, I can help you take care of some of the more esthetic aspects of skincare and post-sun exposure.
