Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with Speech-Language Pathologist Anna Daley, M.A., CCC-SLP, owner of Nexa Speech, in supporting a client whose life had been profoundly impacted by a traumatic choking incident. Following the event, the client developed significant fear around eating that evolved into ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder).
Through months of trauma-focused treatment, including EMDR and gradual food exposure work, we helped address the emotional and physiological responses that had become associated with eating. Along the way, the client was also diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), which received appropriate medical treatment and provided important context for their experience.
After significant progress in therapy, Anna completed a Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), helping to assess swallowing function and further support the client’s confidence and recovery.
This case was a powerful reminder that healing often requires a multidisciplinary approach. When mental health providers, speech-language pathologists, and medical professionals work together, we can address the whole person—not just symptoms—and create opportunities for lasting change.
I am deeply honored to have been part of this healing process. As a trauma therapist and an eating disorder, therapist, this has been a highlight of my career!

All of those positive, small, day-to-day choices, lead to something very beautiful. They may not feel meaningful in the moment. But, keep your therapy appointment. Go for that walk. Call a friend and get it out. Eat something nourishing for your body. The small things lead to lasting peace. 🫶🏼
