💥 Part 2: From Symptoms to Solutions — Diagnosing Gas Pressure Problems

In Part 1, we identified warning signs of potential gas pressure or flow problems: weak flames, delayed ignition, flame dropout, unusual burner noise, and performance changes when other gas appliances operate. Part 2 focuses on finding the cause and the solution.
Gas delivery problems can originate anywhere in the system, so don’t automatically assume the burner or ignition system has failed.
Start With the Basics
First, verify the fire feature is configured for the correct fuel and meets the manufacturer’s pressure and BTU requirements. Then measure—don’t guess. A qualified professional can use a manometer to evaluate:
🔥 Static Pressure — pressure with the appliance off
🔥 Operating Pressure — pressure while gas is flowing
A system can have acceptable static pressure but experience a significant drop under demand.
Follow the Gas
Troubleshooting should evaluate the complete system:
Fuel → Gas Supply → Piping → Regulator → Pressure → Or***ce → Burner → Flame
Potential problems include:
• Undersized or excessively long gas lines
• Too many fittings or other restrictions
• Partially closed valves, debris, or moisture
• Improperly sized or damaged regulators
• Incorrect fuel configuration or or***ce
• Blocked, contaminated, or damaged burners
• Improper fire media placement

Verify the gas supply before assuming the burner is at fault. Replacing a burner won’t solve an upstream pressure or flow restriction.
Gas-system testing, adjustments, and repairs should be performed by qualified professionals following HPC instructions and applicable codes.
